A Podcast with Ross and Nick #109 - Backstory

A Podcast with Ross and Nick

Nick shares the voice acting for his upcoming Super Haters video comic while Ross can't remember the movies he watched in the past two weeks.

Then it's time for Ross's deviantART podcast suggestions post and this week we're talking about backstory (thx to kin-no-namazu). Ross got burned out on backstory with The Abandoned, and he had a really fantastical backstory for Water Baby that ended up getting edited out. He wishes he had more backstory for Wet Moon. As for Super Haters, Nick just makes up the backstory as he goes.

Both guys agree that a lot of story that gets cut often turns into backstory and informs the characters even if it's not shown on the pages. Then Ross digs deep into Audrey's backstory and talks about how she's changed over the course of Wet Moon. That spins into a conversation about Wolverine's backstory.

After the end theme, Ross and Nick talk about their own backstories... and old Fairport High School yearbooks!!!

NEXT: Farts, getting into the comics industry, and resolving story arcs.

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #29 - Always Has Pie!

Ross is on Wikipedia... but is his entry good enough??? (Answer: no) Then the guys talk about Ross' b-day, Zerokiller, Xero, and finally... the Punisher in FRANKENCASTLE!!! It's the fanman conversation that's been nearly two months in the making! Do they like it? Do they hate it? Does anyone care? (Answer: no)

The Top 9 Comics I Read in 2009

Just a quick FYI -- this post in no way affects the AudioShocker's 2009 YOU DON'T SUCK Awards. This is a just a personal list of books I read this year that I loved. Doesn't mean they came out this year -- this is just my favorite of what I experienced this year.

9. Tales of the TMNT #64 (very excellent Mikey issue)
8. Uncanny X-Men #287 (first story where we really see Bishop's timeline)
7. Infinity War #1 (love that opening scene!)
6. Surfer Silver #35 (love the plot twist!)
5. Wet Moon 5 (love that ending scene!)
4. Gello Apocalypse (in particular, the story starting with the Charlie Brown cover)
3. Iron Man #261 (OMG! awesome parallel plot storytelling by JRjr)
2. G-Man: Cape Crisis (can't just pick one issue!)
1. Iron Man #306 (love me some Len Kaminski arc and this issue blew my mind)

Why the Top 9? Because 10 is too many and 9 is better. 3 X 3 = Neal hates math.

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #12 - Just a Smidgen of Wet Moon 5

Ross Campbell and Nick Marino promised you a juicy Wet Moon 5 podcast and now they deliver! WAITAMINUTE... they meant to deliver, but then things got a little weird. The guys talk about setting the clock fast, mutual friends from Fairport, NY (including one that sat on Nick's head), construction at Ross' apartment building, and... wait for it... WET MOON 5!!! But they're no spoilers here! In fact, the Wet Moon 5 bathroom scene leads into a discussion of personal gastrointestinal problems, which naturally leads to food (and then leads into the labels of vegetarian vs. vegan vs. whatever). After ragging on Thanksgiving, the talk returns to Wet Moon 5 and the fictional continuation of Harry Potter and Twilight. Next episode: ALF, dwarf planets, District 9, and (maybe, but probably not) Wet Moon 5!!!

Wet Moon 5 and G-Man: Cape Crisis #1 OUT TODAY!!!

HOLY @#$%! Today's a big day at the comic shop for the AudioShocker!!!

First off, Ross Campbell's Wet Moon 5 is in stores today. If you've been listening to A Podcast with Ross and Nick, then you already know that Ross has been extremely tight-lipped about the details of WM5. That just means it's gotta be juicy! Ross and Nick will be talking about WM5 and dropping behind-the-scenes info starting with A Podcast with Ross and Nick #12 on August 26th, so that gives you two whole weeks to read the book before you listen.

Also, Chris Giarrusso's G-Man: Cape Crisis #1 hits racks today. This awesome all-ages comic book was the topic of our most recent conversation with Chris in AudioShocker Podcast #91. This is the first issue of a five-part mini, so I suggest you get in on the ground floor today and snag a copy.

Man, this day could only be bigger for us if Jay Faerber had another issue of Dynamo 5 out today! Too bad D5 #23 came out last week... (and, by the way, it was an EXCELLENT issue).

EDIT: Wet Moon 5... or not.

EDIT 2: Wet Moon 5 out on August 19th!

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #8 - Profane Aliens Love Libraries

INDECENT PROPOSAL part 3 has arrived! In this penultimate chapter, Ross Campbell and Nick Marino talk about Jingle All the Way, Hollow Man, Total Recall, and The Dark Knight. Then the debate opens - is there a film series where the third film is just as good or better than the previous two films? Threequels that make the cut include Gamora 3, Naked Gun 33 1/3, The Chronicles of Riddick, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Rocky 3, and Alien 3. Then Ross geeks out on the plots of Alien and Alien 3 (but not Aliens). Then the guys discuss Ross' upcoming Shadoweyes comic book, talking about YA books, all ages content, and profanity. And after the end theme, the guys talk about comics in libraries and, specifically, which of Ross' books can be found (hint: it's Water Baby).

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #5 - Fuchsia is My Evil Color

It's a social media smorgasbord as Nick Marino continues to force Ross Campbell to help him create a MySpace page for his real-life supervillain, Nik Neptune. Ross drops news that there might be pre-release copies of Wet Moon 5 at SDCC, and then the guys discuss LiveJournal, how Ross knows nothing about Facebook (gasp!), and doesn't want to join Twitter (double gasp!). Thrill to the sounds of Ross and Nick as they figure out what to name this podcast series! This episode ends the first story arc of A Podcast with Ross and Nick (episodes 1-5). Be back next week for the start of the second story arc!!!

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #2 - Pink Scarf with No Shirt

The saga continues! Ross Campbell and Nick Marino develop their answer to the World Superhero Registry: Nik Neptune, real-life supervillain. Actually, it's more like Nick forces Ross to help him. Meanwhile, Ross talks about some of the details behind Wet Moon 5. Nick tries to squeeze as much info out of him as he can, but Ross refuses to give up any plot spoilers. For all the comic artists out there, Ross does give up a lot about the nuts and bolts of how the art of Wet Moon 5 came together. Then Ross makes tea and eats some dried apricots. Seriously. (We promise next week will be more exciting.)

AudioShocker Podcast #58 - Ross Campbell Talks Wet Moon 4

Ross Campbell is afraid that his comics career might be drowned in evil just like Wet Moon 4, while Nick thinks that Ross should reinvigorate the franchise with Ultimate Wet Moon (though Ross would prefer a more classic Wet Moon 2099 revamp instead). Then, after the end theme, Ross shares his feelings on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (and we promise it ain't pretty).

Wet Moon 4: Drowned in Evil - TXT Message Review

I read Ross Campbell's Wet Moon 4: Drowned in Evil graphic novel last week in preparation for our podcast interview airing on December 2, 2008. Here's the text message I sent to Ross when I was done:

Finished wet moon 4. Loved unknown, the cleo & mara thing, and especially the ending.

There's an Unknown hero running around Wet Moon...

For good measure, here's an interview with Ross on Comic Book Resources about Water Baby and Wet Moon 4. And for extra awesome measure, here are the AudioShocker's most recent podcast interviews with Ross, one about Water Baby and the other about Wet Moon 4.
