Pittsburgh's Small Press Festival 2010

PGH SPF 2010

I'm probably beating a damn dead horse at this point, and for that I apologize. But I realized that I don't have anything written about this year's show... and I SHOULD considering that I'm helping organize the festivities!

Here's the official schpeel:

The SPF Expo will be held on September 25th and 26th, from 12pm to 5pm, at AIR: Artists Image Resource! Registration costs only $25, and in return your press, book, magazine, or organization receives a table, two passes, and signage for both days! We have lots of big things coming in September, and we hope you'll be there to experience it!

Basically, SPF is all about Pittsburgh's small press scene -- whether it's comics, mini comics, zines, small press lit, or whatever. And registration is open now. So go sign up if you want to exhibit.

No Ross and Nick Podcast Today, But Check This Stuff Out...

I told Neal that as soon as he put that "2 New Podcasts Every Week!" thing in the header I was gonna miss an episode.

And lo and behold, missed I have. Ross has some friend thing going on and we didn't plan far enough ahead to record earlier than usual, so we didn't record at all.

But I've still got stuff to talk about! First off, if you don't already know, Ross is going to be a guest at FanExpo Canada on August 27-29. You can buy Shadoweyes in person or have Ross sign his name on your nether regions (or both).

And the AudioShocker's gonna have a table there too! It'll probably be stuffed somewhere in the back of a supply closet between a cabinet of toilet paper and a rack of that powder you throw on vomit to make it easier to clean up... ya know, just the way we like it.

At our table, we'll have all the comics featured in the AudioShocker Store, as well as two new items -- a digital Super Haters: Special Edition (complete with audio commentary!) and ashcans of the first volume of Project Basement (featuring cover art by Kaylie McDougal, who'll also be at the show!):

Project Basement sketchbook volume 1

Not too shabby, eh? (BTW, click on it for some awesome Project Basement wallpaper!)

Anyway, if you can't make it to Toronto, never fear, because mere weeks later, you can pick up some AudioShocker Comics goodies at Pittsburgh's Small Press Festival wekend expo. Held on the city's North Side at AIR from September 25-26, it's gonna have zines, comics, self-pubished literature, and tons more.

If you're near the Pittsburgh area and you'd like to set up at the show, register now! Tables are only $25, and I'll be there, so at least you know it's gonna be sexy.

AudioShocker Podcast #89 - 3-Pete! Cracked: Rejected Dominates The Show

Things get a little weird in PART 3 OF THE 3 PART PETE MARATHON as Nick and Pete discuss Cracked: Rejected, their new ashcan released at SPF: Pittsburgh's Small Press Festival. This bizarre conversation features reflections on the two months from 2005 when Pete and Nick pitched ideas to the editors behind the relaunch of Cracked Magazine... which eventually became Cracked.com [see these old blog posts for even more Cracked fun]. Inquiring listeners want to know: will the shameless self-promotion ever end? THE ANSWER IS NO! To round out the episode, Nick calls in live from SPF and gives his final word on the success of the first Small Press Festival in Pittsburgh.

The Top 9 Reasons to Go to Pittsburgh's Small Press Festival Expo

If you live in Pittsburgh, then you should be at the Small Press Festival (SPF) Expo this weekend. It's that easy.

I'm going to be there on Saturday from 12 PM to 6 PM at the table labeled AudioShocker (and/or Nick Marino). I won't be there on Sunday but my awesome table-mate, Shawn Atkins of Workshop13.net (comic creator of Gello Apocalypse and Explorers of the Unknown), will be there holding it down and still selling my merch.

But if all that's not enough for you, here are the Top 9 reasons you should get your ass over to the Regina Gouger Miller Gallery on the Carnegie Mellon University campus this weekend for the FREE SPF Expo:

9. It may be called the Small Press Festival, but everyone knows that size doesn't matter. Unless you're talking about penises. Then size definitely matters.

8. I'll be there with my laptop and my brand new copy of Street Fighter IV, so come kick my ass in public and humiliate me before I get really good at it.

7. Be one of the first eight lucky humans on Earth to go home with a copy of Patio 1.5, the remastered and (sort of) remixed version of the classic Unlicensed Attorneys at Law track, Patio. This song is unreleased and awesome, so come snag a copy of it on the Original Recipe CD.

6. Buy a copy of Apartment 307 and revel in the ensuing insanity.

5. Get Zombie Palin! in ashcan form. Sarah is all the rage right now since she quit being an officially recognized politician to go on a fishing trip and wear goofy fishing overalls, so don't miss this printed representation of our lovable webcomic.

4. Get your copy of The Fur Bucket EP, a Frank Sanchez / Dirty Weekend split EP packed with 9 tracks of excellence. This is the first time these songs have been out as anything other than streaming files, with the exception of the few tracks that ran as Beatcasts here on the AudioShocker.

3. Catch a sneak peak of my upcoming comic book release, Time Log! It's written by Culturology's Pete and I, penciled by Shawn, and inked by yours truly. If you get out to SPF, then you'll see me inking it at the expo when there's some downtime.

2. Pick up a copy of Cracked: Rejected, an SPF-exclusive 20 page zine by myself and Pete that details our failed pitches to Cracked Magazine (now Cracked.com). If you don't pick this up, you're going to be really confused when you listen to next week's AudioShocker Podcast #89.

1. Yeah, it's the Pittsburgh Small Press Festival, but everyone knows that big things come in small packages... unless you're talking about penises, of course. Then small things are REALLY small and big things are REALLY big. But this is a Small Press Festival - not a penis - so it's gonna be all good.

Why the Top 9? Because 10 is too many and 9 is better. 3 X 3 = Awesome. Now that’s what I call math.

AudioShocker Podcast #88 - Part 2: Pete Podcast of Future Past

While Culturology is on vacation, Pete podcasts... which brings us to PART 2 OF THE 3 PART PETE MARATHON!!! Pete perused some comics last week and so we discuss the Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, Stagger Lee, Mp3.com and Weedlands College Radio, MC Hammer on the TODAY Show, I Die at Midnight, a Mobius strip made out of Orbit gum, Northwest Passage, G-Man: Learning to Fly by Chris Giarrusso, all ages, Zombie Palin, Pittsburgh's Small Press Festival, Paris Hilton's My New BFF, Iron Man backissues, two calls from the AudioShocker Comment Line, Kung Fu Panda, Seth Rogen is overexposed, Katherine Heigl is the new Meg Ryan, The Spirit, and more legit shit.

Zombies, Vultures, and Crack at Pittsburgh's Small Press Festival

Okay, not exactly. It's more like Zombie Palin, Apartment 307, and Cracked Magazine (or nowadays what the kids would know as Cracked.com). See, I'm going to be at this year's Small Press Festival in Pittsburgh from July 18-19. There's actually a lot more to SPF than the vendor expo I'll be at, but that's the part where the zombies, vultures, and crack come in. Let me explain...

Zombie Palin will have an ashcan out at SPF. Maybe you remember her, maybe you don't. She was the star of a webcomic that Pete and I did here at the AudioShocker for a couple of months. Featuring the classic 11 Zombie Palin strips and more, this ashcan has a sweet new cover I just whipped up yesterday. Here's a preview:

Zombie Palin ashcan cover

Apartment 307 is a minicomic Pete and I contributed to this spring. Pete, along with the other two creators involved, lives in apartment 307. The three stories in this ashcan all have wildly different premises but still manage to involve apartment 307 in their bizarre content. I'll have this comic with me at SPF, but you can always order one from (organizer, editor, and contributor) Josh Blair or pick one up at Phantom of the Attic comics. Check out a preview of Apt. 307 over on Josh's blog.

Cracked won't actually be at SPF. They're too popular for that. But there was a time five years ago when the Cracked name was all but dead. That's when Pete and I got in touch with comics legend Tom DeFalco and pitched some ideas at Cracked for their impending relaunch.

We're printing up an ashcan for SPF featuring our failed Cracked pitches, as well as some behind the scenes material. Then, on the Tuesday following SPF (July 21, 2009), we'll run a very special podcast with even more behind the scenes discussion and anecdotes dating back to our frantic couple of months we spent creating and pitching content to Cracked.

That's all I got for now. Expect more shameless self promotion regarding Pittsburgh's Small Press Festival in the near future. And check out tomorrow's podcast where Pete (you know, the writer of Culturology) will join Justique and I for a special episode that's sure to offend your grandma, your mama, and probably just about everybody else you know.

Palin Resigns!!!

Here I am sitting at my computer and editing my Zombie Palin webcomics into an ashcan for Pittsburgh's upcoming Small Press Festival when I heard the breaking news: Sarah Palin has announced her resignation from the role of Alaskan Governor!

Wow! Does she really think she can win the Presidential Election in 2012? Or does she have some more suspicious reason for resigning? Sex scandal, maybe? I mean, why not! Everyone else is doing it...

Either way, I have to say that I'm surprised that Palin is stepping down by the end of July. But I'm not too surprised that I can't take a moment for a bit of shameless self-promotion.

Zombie Palin tastes fine

In honor of Palin's big move, I suggest you take a few moments and read through all eleven installments of Zombie Palin, a webcomic by Pete and I that ran in late 2008 wherein Vice President Sarah Palin rises to the top spot as leader of the free world when zombies attack the White House and kill President McCain.
