Comic Books 09.04.2008 - What I Expect to Get

Last week I tried out a little experiment. While preparing my weekly “what to get” list for the comic shop, I decided to take it public and see how accurately I could predict my comic book haul on a weekly basis.

Not only did last week have a large amount of expected purchases, it also had a lot of surprises. I ended up leaving my LCS with a ton of free comics.

This week looks to be the exact opposite. And that’s fine by me. I have a lot of past purchases and borrowed books to catch up on, mostly in the form of large graphic novels. This week is so weak, in fact, that my pull list is bare. And the extra books I plan to pick up are looking rather low as well.

*** Pull List ***        $0.00

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #570  $2.99
MICHELANGELO 3RD KIND #1 $3.25
*** Extras ***           $6.24

*** Everything ***       $6.24
*** Estimated $$$ ***    $5.98

This recent Amazing Spider-Man arc has been strong thus far, so I’m back for week 3. To my suprise, there’s a TMNT limited series coming out. However, since I’m one of two people with TMNT comics on my pull list at my LCS, there’s a chance that this Michelangelo title won’t even be on the racks at Phantom tomorrow.

In fact, I’m counting on my shop to not have the TMNT comic in stock. I expected to leave the store with Amazing Spider-Man #570 and another $2.99 comic that catches my interest while browsing. So check back in a couple days to see what I got!

Comic Books 08.27.2008 - What I Actually Got

Here’s my actual comic book haul from Wednesday.

AVENGERS INITIATIVE #16 $2.99
BLACK PANTHER #40       $2.99
MVL ADV AVENGERS #27    $2.99
MVL ADV SUPER HEROES #2 $2.99
X-MEN LEGACY #215       $2.99
*** Pull List ***      $11.96

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #569 $2.99
WOLVERINE #68           $2.99
MVL ADV FANTASTIC 4 #39 $2.99
SHE-HULK 2 #32          $2.99
NEW AVENGERS #44        $2.99
FC SUPERMAN BEYOND #1   $4.50
FREEDOM FORMULA #1       FREE
HERCULES #1              FREE
MARVEL YOUR UNIVERSE     FREE
ZOT! BOOK 1              LOAN
*** Extras ***          $8.97

*** Estimated $$$ ***  $23.92
*** Actual $$$ ***     $20.93

Looking at my pull list, Marvel Adventures Avengers #27 was either listed incorrectly by Diamond or they shorted my store’s order. As for the extras, I was almost 100% sure that I was going to buy Amazing Spider-Man #569 based off the strength of last issue. I expected to purchase Wolverine #68 because I’ve enjoyed Old Man Logan, but something about this issue just didn’t draw me in.

I was surprised to find that Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four #39 was a “silent issue” where all the word balloons are filled with images instead. This clever storytelling device by Chris Eliopoulos hooked me. I love the art of GG Studio, so I assumed I would pick up She-Hulk 2 #32. After a flip thru, New Avengers #44 and Superman Beyond #1 didn’t do it for me so I passed.

Overall, this was a good day at the comic shop for me because most of my favorite titles came out. To top it off, I ended up leaving with far more content than I expected — three free comics and one loaned trade paperback. The employees tossed me free copies of Freedom Formula and Hercules, while Marvel had one of their free “saga” books (the Secret Invasion Saga was excellent so I look forward to this one). I’m also borrowing the collected edition of Zot! issues #1-10 from a friend.

My estimated total was $23.92, which accounted for my entire pull list plus three more books. Since Marvel Adventures Avengers never made it to the store, I only bought $20.93 worth of comics. I enjoyed taking a look at my expected purchases versus my actual purchases, so I’ll do this exercise again next week.

Comic Books 08.27.2008 - What I Expect to Get

Here’s a little experiment I want to try. Every week I go to my local comic shop, and beforehand I prepare a list of what I plan to get. This list is, of course, never what I end up going home with. I want to try and track how accurate my list is in relation to my actual purchases.

I’ve gone through Diamond’s direct market shipping list for this week and made my choices. The top section reflects my actual pull list at my comic shop. The second section represents books that I might like to pick up, but I haven’t put them on hold and therefore I will check them out once I get to the store to make my decision.

The top line of the bottom section represents the grand total if I purchased all of the items in the first two sections (which never happens). The bottom line represents the estimated total I think I will spend based upon an educated guess of my actual tastes (this line is new to my list and I’m not sure how accurate it will be).

AVENGERS INITIATIVE #16 $2.99
BLACK PANTHER #40       $2.99
MVL ADV AVENGERS #27    $2.99
MVL ADV SUPER HEROES #2 $2.99
X-MEN LEGACY #215       $2.99
*** Pull List ***      $14.95

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #569 $2.99
WOLVERINE #68           $2.99
MVL ADV FANTASTIC 4 #39 $2.99
SHE-HULK 2 #32          $2.99
NEW AVENGERS #44        $2.99
FC SUPERMAN BEYOND #1   $4.50
*** Extras ***         $19.45

*** Everything ***     $34.40
*** Estimated $$$ ***  $23.92

Tomorrow or Friday I will post what I actually purchased.

DARK HORSE COMICS

DOMO SCULPTED MAGNET

Nick: Alright! We’re getting started early this week. What a goofy title, even for a statue / magnet (if that’s what this thing even is). Excellent.

FRAZETTA EGYPTIAN QUEEN STATUE
JOURNAL TOKIDOKI KAITEN SUSHI
JUDGE DREDD DREDD VS DEATH STATUE
JUDGE DREDD DREDD VS DEATH STATUE

Nick: Hmmmm… you got me on this one. They cost the same. They have the same name. What’s the difference?

Neal: I seriously hope Judge Death is in this issue [Editors Note- I think Neal means statue, not issue. - Nick]. That dude is brutal.

PIGEONS FROM HELL #4 (OF 4)

Neal: More Hellfoul!

ROBOTS & DONUTS TP

Nick: I hope there’s a second volume of this title with the name “A.F. - ARTIFICIAL FLAVORING”

Neal: Christian Siriano got a comic book?

UNCLE CREEPY STATUE

Neal: This is great.

BERSERK TP VOL 24
LANKHMAR BOOK 06 SWORDS & ICE MAGIC

Nick: This would be a far more exciting title if it was “LANKHMAR BOOK 06 SWORDS & MAGIC ON ICE” — don’t you agree that a comic book about an ice show is far more interesting than a comic about ice magic?

SCRAMBLED INK HC

Nick: I’ve never tried anything made with octopus ink (I know they make black pasta with it), but this title definitely made me imagine scrambled eggs all grayish-yellow with the ink of octopi mixed in. Mmm mmm… tastes gooooood.

STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF OLD REPUBLIC #31 TURNABOUT
STAR WARS LEGACY #26

Nick: This month in Dark Horse’s non-fiction Star Wars series: Fans cringe as George Lucas continues to milk the prequel concept as he releases Star Wars episode 2.5 as an animated film. When will the madness stop?!

CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #1

Nick: On a serious note, this is fantastic timing by Dark Horse. The new Conan movie teaser poster was just released (presumably due to some sort of secret promotion / announcement at SDCC next week) and now there’s a brand new Conan #1 on the stands. Nothing funny here — just good business.

SIMON DARK #10
SUPERMAN AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES HC
TANGENT SUPERMANS REIGN #5 (OF 12)
TEARS OF A LAMB VOL 03

Nick: You may be a bit confused by the title of this book because the first two volumes were titled “TEARS OF A CLOWN.” However, if you remember, the clown was killed off at the end of volume two after he got raped by Dr. Light. Ahh DCU continuity, I love you.

BATMAN STRIKES #47
