Astute readers may have noticed a slight change in the AudioShocker over the weekend. No? Well, you clearly aren't reading enough, but I'll spell it out for you anyway. We finally started placing ads on the site. But wait, don't the sidebars, headers, and front page all the look the same? Yup, they do. We decided to start slow by implementing what I have coined the 'scrollpop' ad unit.

Every few comments, you will now see a line that says "AudioShocker Shoutouts!". If you mousewheel over it, or mouse through it, a small banner will reveal itself or 'pop' in. We aren't trying to be tricky, malicious, or intrusive. We just want to try out some revenue possibilities and hopefully cover our costs for the site. Here is a little demo:

AudioShocker Shoutouts!

Our first shoutout this month is for AudioShocker regular Ross Campbell's stellar Shadoweyes project. If you are interested in advertising on the site, please email us.

To my knowledge, we are really the only people doing this, and we're interested in your feedback. I coded the whole shebang myself over the weekend and consider it a personal triumph. (and I will cut you if you try to steal it or pass it off as your own!)

HOLY @#$%! Today's a big day at the comic shop for the AudioShocker!!!

First off, Ross Campbell's Wet Moon 5 is in stores today. If you've been listening to A Podcast with Ross and Nick, then you already know that Ross has been extremely tight-lipped about the details of WM5. That just means it's gotta be juicy! Ross and Nick will be talking about WM5 and dropping behind-the-scenes info starting with A Podcast with Ross and Nick #12 on August 26th, so that gives you two whole weeks to read the book before you listen.

Also, Chris Giarrusso's G-Man: Cape Crisis #1 hits racks today. This awesome all-ages comic book was the topic of our most recent conversation with Chris in AudioShocker Podcast #91. This is the first issue of a five-part mini, so I suggest you get in on the ground floor today and snag a copy.

Man, this day could only be bigger for us if Jay Faerber had another issue of Dynamo 5 out today! Too bad D5 #23 came out last week... (and, by the way, it was an EXCELLENT issue).

EDIT: Wet Moon 5... or not.

EDIT 2: Wet Moon 5 out on August 19th!

This is my first time really using TalkShoe to record (after learning about it from the Comic Book Pitt). From what I understand, you can listen in as Ross and I record. In fact, you can even call in and join the conversation if you want.

Hopefully, we won't hit any major technical difficulties. If we do, maybe I'll just head over to the TalkShoe offices and slap them around, since they're located just outside of Pittsburgh!

Here at the AudioShocker, we've got some awesome podcast developments brewing in the very near future.

First up, on this Tuesday, June 9, 2009, we have the shocking return of AudioShocker Podcast #82. This podcast audio was initially lost due to a technical mistake with Google Voice, but we held out hope and ran #83 last Tuesday just in case a miracle happened...

AND happen it did! Tom from Google Voice read my bitchy blog post and saved my conversation with Ross Campbell from permanent deletion. So take a trip back in time and listen to #82 this Tuesday.

Then make sure to get your ass back here the very next day for A Podcast with Ross and Nick #1, a direct continuation of AudioShocker Podcast #82. Airing Wednesday, June 10, 2009, this show is the debut episode of a brand new weekly AudioShocker podcast series. Comic book writer/artist Ross Campbell and I will be talking about whatever the fuck we want, including comics, movies, real-life superheroes, domain renewal scams, and tons more.

So keep it locked on the AudioShocker as we continue to bring you the most ridiculous conversation on music, movies, comics, TV, video games, and tons more... now TWICE a week!!!

On Thursday night, Ross Campbell and I recorded 178 minutes of podcast. That's right, we recorded almost three fucking hours of incoherent babble just for you. In fact, we logged so much talk time that we decided to spin off our conversation into its own recurring podcast feature.

Delighted with our insane rant, we hit "4" on the keypad and heard the "call recording off" voice I've come to love over the years. But then something horrible happened - THE RECORDING NEVER DELIVERED TO MY GOOGLE VOICE INBOX.

I've lost three hours of podcast talk time intended to fill the upcoming AudioShocker Podcast #82 as well as the first three episodes of A Podcast with Ross and Nick. What the hell, Google Voice?

This never would have happened with GrandCentral. For those of you unfamiliar with Google Voice, it used to be a service called GrandCentral, which assigned you a dummy phone number and allowed you to record incoming calls. It was an amazing service. I never had a single technical problem with it.

But Google Voice has not been so smooth. First off, they changed the user interface to something far less friendly. Then they complicated the back end settings. Then they made call recording unreliable. I've had issues getting my recorded calls to deliver to my inbox in Google Voice before, but that was just when I was testing it out.

Everything went fine when I interviewed Paul Tobin a couple months ago. But this is only the second time I've tried to use Google Voice to record a podcast interview for the AudioShocker and the damn service dumped my entire recorded call. WTF!?!?!?!?!

I should have known there was going to be a problem recording that night. Ross and I had technical issues from the start - I tried calling in my usual fashion and the service kept sending me to the voicemail checker instead of to Ross (even though I clearly unchecked my phone number from the list in the settings tab).

So users beware - Google Voice is not the same as GrandCentral. It's got a lot of problems and it's pissing me off right now. I know it's a free service and I shouldn't be this mad, but I could always depend on GrandCentral. Obviously I can't do the same when it comes to Google Voice.

It's sad but true. Even a financial stalwart like the AudioShocker has buckled under the pressure of the economic crisis. Here are the Top 9 crazy events that have transpired due to monetary doom sweeping across all of America.

9. Ross Campbell wants us to pay him to do podcast interviews from now on. (C'mon, Ross... the damn things are already shameless fucking self-promotion!)

8. To save money on multimedia expenses, we almost changed our catchphrase to "Music. Movie. Comic. A little bit of media here and there is sort of our thing."

7. To save even more money, we almost changed our catchphrase to "iMeem. Hulu. Zuda. Free media is DEFINITELY our thing."

6. Gotham Chopra stopped hanging around the blog because his comic books all turned to liquid. (Get it!?! Virgin Comics = Liquid Comics! They used to be in print and now they're just online! ... Okay, fine, you win - the joke sucked.)

5. Justique has a whole lot less extra cash to spend on pornography. (She's down to about $200 per day.)

4. Nick has even less extra cash to spend on hookers. (He's down to about $2 per week... but DAMN that prosthetic handjob is worth every penny!)

3. Kirsten stopped commenting on Pete's blog posts because she was too busy earning some extra money on the side working as a high-paid lesbian escort (see this incriminating photo for evidence).

2. Neal couldn't hire the Elan Luz Rivera lookalike stripper he wanted for his birthday. (Instead, he had to settle for the Susan Sarandon lookalike GMILF from next door.)

1. We know you love the AudioShocker just the way it is, but be on the look out for our new blog name... COMING SOON: "Tampax Tampons presents the AudioShocker podcast & blog"!!! (Our new catchphrase: "We're stuffing some music, movies, and comics all up in that shit!")

More: The Top 9 Social Networks! (And how to choose the right one for you.)

Why the Top 9? Because 10 is too many and 9 is better. 3 X 3 = Awesome. Now that’s what I call math.

It has been one hell of a week for me and my passionate relationship with Avatar: The Last Airbender. Last Thursday, I found out that the four main roles in the upcoming live-action Airbender trilogy would be played by white kids, discarding Inuit and Asian heritage in lieu of something (which I assume Paramount considers to be) more "marketable" to an American audience.

Insanity aside, there was an upswing to this discovery: I started talking about Avatar more. And that's always a good thing in my book (which has lots of pictures, little text, and very few pages).

All this discussion reminded me of an exercise I've been playing for the past few months. Said exercise is easy -- select your two favorite characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender and reveal your true inner self to the entire world. It sounds overly simple, but it's shockingly accurate.

Here, I'll go first:

Me:
1. Uncle Iroh
2. Appa

Now here's a few more for your consideration:

Justique (of the AudioShocker podcast):
1. Aang
2. Azula

Ross Campbell (of Soaking Luna fame):
1. Katara
2. Zuko

My brother-in-law (of Mack Trucks employ):
1. Azula
2. Toph

My day job co-worker (of webmaster trade):
1. Zuko
2. Momo

Get it? Okay, now it's your turn. Reveal your true inner being to the cosmos by naming your two favorite Avatar characters in the comments. (I would love to delve into the psychological implications of these choices right here, but I'll save that for the comments as well... along with a few celebrity predictions!)

9. Can I read New Avengers again already!?! I'm sick of this Secret Invasion flashback shit. Bendis, I am thoroughly impressed by your ability to tell a nearly seamless crossover event. But I want my NA's back. You know, the ones that kicked a lot of ass and had great adventures IN THE PRESENT... not in some sort of retcon past.

8. Is Gleaming the Cube ever going to get a new DVD release? The world's greatest skateboarding action-drama has been languishing in near obscurity for almost 10 years thanks to stupid movie companies and their DVD publishing. Gleaming the Cube should be in discount bins at Walmart, not out-of-print!

7. When did wholesome become a codeword for underage slut? Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, the Cheetah Girls, and the list goes on and on. WTF???!!! I don't want to see sexualized high school girls! I want to see full grown sexy women! Who the hell is behind the marketing of these young girls because they should be ashamed (and slapped).

6. Where can I get a quality copy of Darkstalkers for the PS1? I looked on Amazon and I found a copy for a decent price but it was still a pretty high price. This leads me to my next question, which is...

5. Which version of Darkstalkers should I get for the PS1??? Ross has the third one and he likes it. But I'm kind of a snob about this stuff -- I don't need all the characters, I just need the best playability. Case in point: I'll take Capcom's Marvel Super Heroes over Marvel vs. Capcom 2 any day. Same with Street Fighter II Turbo over Street Fighter Alpha 3. But before I can even buy one of these damn Darkstalkers games, I need to know...

4. What's a good website for buying old school video games? I love to play NES and PS1 games, but I have to search all around when I want to buy one. I need a good website for getting any used game I want.

3. Does anyone know a GOOD social networking profile aggregator that will let me view information from multiple MySpace profiles simultaneously? I've tried like 10 of these damn aggregators in the past few days and they all pretty much suck. Power.com would be perfect except it only allows for one MySpace account.

2. Who is going to be the next Black Panther? From the looks of it, it can't be Storm (hint: BP has brown eyes on the cover of February's first issue). So is it going to be T'Challa's sister, Shuri, or what?!

1. What the fuck is a "meme"!?! Ross tried to explain it to me, but I still don't get it. So it's something that people pass around online? Could that be more fucking ambiguous?!!! I need a quality definition and Wikipedia just isn't cutting it.

Next: The Top 9 Botanists of the 18th Century!

Why the Top 9? Because 10 is too many and 9 is better. 3 X 3 = Awesome. Now that’s what I call math.

Over the weekend, Neal updated our version of WordPress for the AudioShocker blog, and everything went to hell. Neal got it fixed within a few hours. The only thing we lost was 1 gig worth of podcasts that we've recorded since October of 2007 (well, more like "deleted from our webspace" than "lost").

It took me from Saturday to Monday to get the old podcasts back up, but I was glad. Why? Along with making some minor file naming changes, I was able to remaster two of our favorite comic book creator interviews in the process:

Our 2-plus-hour talk with Ross Campbell, creator of Wet Moon and Water Baby, has been remastered. Ross is finishing up Wet Moon 4 as we speak, and we should have him back on our show very soon.

I also remastered our chat with Brandon Thomas, creator of Miranda Mercury and writer of Ambidextrous. This episode was originally a bit rough in terms of levels, but that's all been fixed.

But I'm not just writing this post about tech issues and old episodes. I'm also here to let you know about two new regular contributors who have joined the AudioShocker:

First up is Shannon, our new books expert, who has already written two fantastic posts for the blog.

Next up is Conrad, who is currently podcasting with me about the AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies list. The next episode of this series will be up on Friday, July 18, 2008.

Finally, I'm going to be rolling out a new feature on the AudioShocker starting this Sunday, July 20, 2008. It's basically going to be the "AudioShocker Song of the Week." Everything we post will be originally music by artists like Nik Furious, the Unlicensed Attorneys at Law (UAL), Dirty Weekend, Nutsack Supernova, and more. This Sunday will debut a new Nik Furious beat for the upcoming UAL album.

Sorry, super fans. Thanks to my lateness, I didn't get Neal's comments this week. He'll back next week with some real zingers.

Shipping This Week: JULY 2, 2008

DARK HORSE COMICS

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #16
COMPLETE K CHRONICLES TP

Nick: Not to be confused with this week's "SPECIAL K CHRONICLES TP" from Kellogg's Comics.

HELLBOY THE CROOKED MAN #1 (OF
USAGI YOJIMBO TP VOL 22 TOMOES STORY
WONDERMARK BEARDS OF OUR FOREFATHERS

Nick: This must be that epic I've been waiting for about the history of beards. Finally! I thought this would never come out.

DC COMICS

ALL NEW ATOM #25
BATMAN #678 RIP
BILLY BATSON AND THE MAGIC OF SHAZAM #1
BLUE BEETLE #28
COUNTDOWN PRESENTS SEARCH FOR RAY PALMER TP
DARK KNIGHT BATARANGS PROP REPLICA

Nick: Impress and possibly frighten your friends by bringing these Batarang replicas to the park instead of your Frisbee.

DARK KNIGHT GRAPPLING LAUNCHER PROP REPLICA

Nick: Impress and possibly frighten your friends by bringing this fancy-named Bat Rope on your next rock-climbing excursion.

DC SPECIAL RAVEN #5 (OF 5)
FLAT EARTH EXCHANGE VOL 01

Nick: Finally! Some good hard evidence to debunk those morons that think the Earth is round. And since this is in comic book form, people will take it seriously.

INFINITY INC #11
JOKERS ASYLUM THE JOKER #1
JONAH HEX #33
LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #43
LOONEY TUNES #164

Nick: Isn't it bizarre how this series is up to 164 issues, but some of the best comics I've read can't get past the first 10 installments?

MANHUNTER #32
NEW DYNAMIX #4 (OF 5)
NIGHTWING #146
RANN THANAGAR HOLY WAR #3 (OF 8)
SHIRLEY

Nick: No issue number. No "TP" or "VOL" label. Not even a variant cover. Just "SHIRLEY." I must say, I'm seduced by the mystery of this book.

SHOWCASE PRESENTS BATMAN TP VOL 03
STEEL FIST RIKU VOL 01
STORMING PARADISE #1 (OF 6)
SUPERGIRL #31
SUPERMAN LAST SON HC
TOR #3 (OF 6)
TRINITY #5
WAR THAT TIME FORGOT #3 (OF 12)
WATER BABY

Nick: New graphic novel by friend of the AudioShocker, Ross Campbell. Buy this.

WILDSTORM REVELATIONS TP

IMAGE COMICS

AFTER THE CAPE II TP
AMORY WARS II #2 (OF 5)
ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN #7
BRIT #7 ALT CONNECTING CVR
DYNAMO 5 #14

Nick: Good series. Very consistent. Try it.

FRESHMEN HC VOL 01
FRESHMEN SUMMER VACATION SPECIAL

Nick: Want to know what I did for my freshman summer vacation? I moved to a place I'd practically never been before, worked as a kids camp counselor at the local YMCA, and spent my entire summer without friends / with my parents. I can just about promise you that this special issue will be 100% less depressing than my freshman summer vacation. On the flip side, Nashville, TN did used to have a great discount comic book store where I was able to snag countless comic book steals for only $0.25 a piece. I can also just about promise you that this special issue will be waaay more expensive than that.

HYPERKINETIC #1 (OF 4)
LUCHA LIBRE #5
NOBLE CAUSES #35
SAVAGE DRAGON #136
SWORD TP VOL 01

Nick: This title is almost as tantalizing as "SHIRLEY." However, this is given both "TP" and "VOL" by Image Comics, so they totally lost their chance to sell me on it.

MARVEL COMICS

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #564
AMERICAN DREAM #5 (OF 5)

Nick: I'm so excited to see how this story ends that I was dreaming about it in bed this morning. I know you think I'm being sarcastic, but I'm 100% serious here.

ANITA BLAKE VH GUILTY PLEASURES HC VOL 02 DM ED
ASTONISHING X-MEN #25
AVENGERS INITIATIVE PREM HC VOL 02 KILLED ACTION

Nick: Not as awesome as VOL 01 (which happens to carry a quote on the back of the hardcover from a Comics News International review by yours truly), but still damn good.

AVENGERS INVADERS #3 (OF 12)
CABLE #5 DWS

Nick: The first appearance of She-Cable. I kid you not.

CAPTAIN AMERICA TP OPERATION REBIRTH NEW PTG
COUNTER X TP VOL 01 X-FORCE

Nick: Huh wha? Is "COUNTER X" referring to the new X-Force comic on the stands right now?

DARK TOWER END WORLD ALMANAC
DARK TOWER LONG ROAD HOME #5 (OF 5)
ESSENTIAL DEFENDERS TP VOL 4
FANTASTIC FOUR PREM HC LOST ADVENTURES STAN LEE
MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #41
MARVEL ILLUSTRATED THREE MUSKETEERS #2 (OF 6)
MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #13
MIGHTY AVENGERS PREM HC VOL 02 VENOM BOMB

Nick: Someone better use Venom Bomb as a band name FAST!

PATSY WALKER HELLCAT #1 (OF 5)
PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #21
SECRET INVASION #1 DIRECTORS CUT

Nick: If it wasn't already overpriced enough, now here's a shiny new printing for $4.99 instead of the usual $3.99.

SECRET INVASION FRONT LINE #1 (OF 5) SI

Nick: The art in this issue by GG Studios is quite impressive.

SQUADRON SUPREME 2 #1

COMICS

100 PERCENT PERFECT GIRL GN VOL 06 (OF 10)

Nick: HAHAHAHA Fat Chunk HAHAHAHA!

FOUR CONSTABLES SECRET O/T DELIRIUM DAGGER GN VOL 01
FRANK BELLAMYS ROBIN HOOD GN COMPLETE ADVENTURES

Nick: Who is Frank Bellamy and why did he stamp his name on this Robin Hood GN? Wasn't having a normal cover credit enough? On a related note, I once saw Bill Bellamy at the Miami airport.
