There Should Be More Mini Marvels...

Elephant Steve... in the back of Marvel Adventures comic books. I'm not just saying that because Chris Giarrusso is a friend of the AudioShocker (or because I have a weird infatuation with Elephant Steve). I want more Mini Marvels because they're fun, exciting, and they make my day better.

Problem is, there are significantly less Mini Marvels coming out these days. This concerns me. If you want to read more Mini Marvels comic strips in your monthly comics (or even in digest form), then you should email adventures@marvel.com and tell them. I did.

P.S. While we're on the topic of Mini Marvels, I should mention that Chris G has a new digest out from Image Comics called G-Man: Learning to Fly.

P.P.S. I love you, Elephant Steve.

AudioShocker Podcast #75 - Paul Tobin and the Golden Chamber Pot

Note: Paul Tobin has never endorsed, nor does he intend to endorse, nor has he... to the best of our knowledge... ever even used a golden chamber pot.

With that said, comic book creator Paul Tobin talks about his scriptwriting method, working with artists including Matteo Lolli and Jacopo Camagni and (his wife) Colleen Coover and Patrick Scherberger, editors including Nate Cosby, Doctor Doom and the Masters of Evil #3, writing Spider-Man vs. writing Hulk, and Marvel Adventures Avengers and Marvel Adventures Super Heroes comics. This is part 1 of 3 of our Paul Tobin interview series!

When Paul is done, the golden chamber pot arrives. Neal has outgrown Del tha Funkee Homosapien, the 80s synth funk group D Train is the one for Nick, Justique is feeling the electronica of Glitch Mob and their side projects including Nasty Ways (makers of the Lil Wayne Lollipop remix), Nick was let down by MPLSoUND and Lotusflow3r by Prince, and Neal has weird feelings about SuChin Pak.

Chris Giarrusso talks about Mini Marvels: Secret Invasion and his work with Marvel Comics. We discuss writing one-page gags vs. continuous stories, working solo vs. working with collaborators, Hawkeye, Skrulls, Thor, and tons more. And be back next week when Chris talks about his creator owned work with Image Comics, G-Man!

Then Justique, Neal, and Nick talk about Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Street Fighter IV, The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian, famous film names re-titled to be porn movies, Jigoku Shoujo anime a.k.a. Impromptu Letter Writing Campaign: Make Mini Marvels Monthly

Elephant SteveYou know those cartoon strips by Chris Giarrusso that sit in the back of Marvel Adventures comics? They're awesome. And it's not fair that we only get one strip a month.

Mini Marvels should be a monthly comic book! Email mondomarvel@marvel.com and tell them. I already wrote the letter for you (see below). Just copy it into your email client and hit send! And if you don't want to send the email for me, at least do it for Elephant Steve.

--------------------------------------------

Make Mini Marvels Monthly!!!!

The Mini Marvels Anthology was great and all, but I've already read all of those strips before! The Mini Marvels cartoons by Chris G are far too great to be relegated to the back of Marvel Adventures comics (which, by the way, are some of the best comic books on the market right now - don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!!) with only one new strip a month. That's just not enough! That's why I need you to make Mini Marvels a monthly series!!!! Or at least a quarterly collection of new material!!!!! How many exclamation points do I have to use to let you know how serious I am???!!!!!! MAKE MINI MARVELS MONTHLY!!!

Free Comic Book Day 2008 - A Humble Marvel Adventures Confession

Marvel Adventures FCBD 2008A little over one week ago, I came to this forum -- known among savvy readers as the awesome AudioShocker -- and talked smack on the Marvel Adventures Free Comic Book Day offering from Marvel Comics.

Truth be told, talking smack is a bit of an exaggeration. It was more like expressing disappointment. And I was disappointed at the time -- I had read the issue and it just didn't live up to my standards.

Truth be told, saying I read the issue is a bit of an exaggeration. It was more like I read the first two-thirds of the story, and then I made assumptions about the rest of the issue.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I reviewed the issue without finishing it. I broke the unbreakable rule of reviewing -- don't review something that you have read, seen, watched, or listened to from start to finish.

It just so happens that I finished reading the Marvel Adventures FCBD 2008 issue on Saturday, and DAMN! what an ending! Once the Mandarin shows up for a second time, the story really hits a groove and finishes in fine form.

Elephant SteveI apologize for giving an opinion half-cocked. It was wrong. And I'm grateful for finishing this excellent comic book by Jeff Parker, Paul Tobin, Alvin Lee, Terry Pallot, Wil Quintana, and Nate Piekos.

To make matters even better, the issue finished off with a Mini Marvels comic strip by Chris Giarrusso featuring none other than Elephant Steve! I love Elephant Steve. And I love this comic book.

Free Comic Book Day 2008 - And the Winner Is?

So after all this Free Comic Book Day hype, who put out the best book?

Let's start with a few things that didn't shine quite as bright as I'd hoped.

TwoMorrows Publishing easily claimed the prize for Best Free Comic Book Day Offering of 2007, but 2008's book isn't so stellar. Comics Go Hollywood is good but it's aimed more at the novice reader rather than the burgeoning continuity encyclopedia fan. Not that there's anything wrong with that – it's just not as rich with information as it could be.
Marvel Adventures also fell a bit short. Maybe I was hyping it up too much in my imagination, but this issue isn't as captivating as some of the better Marvel Adventures offerings. It's still a strong outing, but it's no Marvel Adventures Hulk by Paul Benjamin and David Nakayama or Marvel Adventures Avengers by Ty Templeton and Ig Guara.

Now for the good stuff!

The Runner-Up for Best Free Comic Book Day Offering of 2008: Maintenance from Oni Press. This one-and-done tale about two janitors at a corporation run by supervillain scientists is an excellent exercise in fun storytelling. This free comic did what any FCBD offering should do – it convinced me to pick up the actual series the next time I'm in my comic shop.
And the Winner for Best Free Comic Book Day Offering of 2008: X-Men by Marvel Comics. This was a shocker, super fans. I did not expect this book to "wow" me like it did. It was on my FCBD wanted list, but towards the bottom. Yet instead of a mediocre read, Mike Carey and Greg Land treated me to an emotional, interesting, and action-packed issue. This bodes well for the future of the post-Messiah CompleX X-Men franchise.

All around, it was a great Free Comic Book Day where even the weakest free comics were still excellent reads. I can't wait for FCBD 2009!
