Listen to Collider's recap of the 2011 Hero Complex film fest

I'm putting together today's HyperComboCast #3 as I type this, and while I'm getting that posted, I'm listening to the various audio clips from Collider.com's recap of this year's Hero Complex film festival.

Collider is sort of podcasting without realizing they're podcasting. They've got an intense set of live audio, featuring speakers such as Mike Mignola, Robert Downey Jr., and the Captain America screenwriters. Oh, and Jim Lee and Geoff Johns talk about the DC relaunch. Not too shabby.

Here's some of the audio (everything links directly to the mp3s):

I haven't listened to everything yet, but what I can tell you (based on Collider's descriptions) is that Downey Jr. and Fav talk about the Iron Man movies AND The Avengers movie, Mignola talks briefly about the Hellboy movies and comics, and Lee and Johns are joined by Grant Morrison.

There's also more audio on in the blog post I didn't link to, like Warren Beatty and Richard Donner. So if that's your thing, you should probably pop over to Collider.com and check it out.

Also, I'm eating Crunchy Nut. You'll learn more about that on tomorrow's AudioShocker Podcast #182.

The Marvel Action Hour is streaming on Netflix and it's fantastically terrible

Some of you may remember the Marvel Action Hour from back in the 90s -- a block of superhero cartoon programming featuring Iron Man and the Fantastic Four. Here's part of a terrible episode of the Iron Man show (fast-forward to 7:30 for Spider-Woman's ridiculous daughter and her awful voice acting):

See? Comedy gold. And if you live in the US, now you can stream these unbelievable cartoons on Netflix's Watch Instantly service by going to the page for Iron Man: The Complete Animated Series.

But here's the catch -- even though Netflix doesn't label the shows correctly, this so-called "Iron Man animated series" is ACTUALLY the entire Marvel Action Hour! That means hokey live-action introductions by Stan Lee for each episode, not to mention the "We'll Be Right Back" commercial intros and outros!!!

Why Netflix chose to just call it Iron Man and not the Marvel Action Hour is beyond me... but hey, the fact is that these episodes are there, so I recommend watching them while you can. As far as I know, this is the first time you've ever been able to watch the Marvel Action Hour in its entirety outside of broadcast syndication (or some sort of bootleg collection).

Recently, I started watching the Iron Man half of the show on DVD, and man did I get some good laughs. In fact, I talked about it on the AudioShocker Podcast #177. Give that podcast a listen if you want to find how just how bad the Iron Man cartoon really is (answer = really bad).

Also, this means that the infamous Johnny Storm rap song is now streaming on Netflix. I'm not sure which episode this is from, but I'm sure you can figure it out on your own pretty easily. If you're a fan of early 90s hip hop like A Tribe Called Quest, you're gonna love this:

It's hot, right? The beat's surprisingly good.

The Top 9 Comics I Read in 2009

Just a quick FYI -- this post in no way affects the AudioShocker's 2009 YOU DON'T SUCK Awards. This is a just a personal list of books I read this year that I loved. Doesn't mean they came out this year -- this is just my favorite of what I experienced this year.

9. Tales of the TMNT #64 (very excellent Mikey issue)
8. Uncanny X-Men #287 (first story where we really see Bishop's timeline)
7. Infinity War #1 (love that opening scene!)
6. Surfer Silver #35 (love the plot twist!)
5. Wet Moon 5 (love that ending scene!)
4. Gello Apocalypse (in particular, the story starting with the Charlie Brown cover)
3. Iron Man #261 (OMG! awesome parallel plot storytelling by JRjr)
2. G-Man: Cape Crisis (can't just pick one issue!)
1. Iron Man #306 (love me some Len Kaminski arc and this issue blew my mind)

Why the Top 9? Because 10 is too many and 9 is better. 3 X 3 = Neal hates math.

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #11 - From CMYK to Direct DVD

Ross Campbell tells Nick Marino about printing problems with the Shadoweyes and what he's doing to make the character's colors look the same on the screen and in print. Nick asks Ross about the format for Shadoweyes, spinning into the differences between graphic novels and single issues. This dovetails into a back and forth about comics business and publishing. Trading cards take over and segue into Sam Keith's cover art. Bishop busts into the conversation and leads into Jean-Claude Van Damme movies, finally taking the guys into direct-to-DVD territory.

The Top 9 Things in Iron Man Comics That I Wanna See in Iron Man 2

9. The Technovore. I'll start off my list with the biggest long shot - a misunderstood antagonist that consists of repurposed tech scraps. Put simply, this character is a technological parasite that consumes the technology it touches. To make it even better, Tony Stark should battle the Technovore in space just like the original comics confrontation.

8. Jim Rhodes wears the Iron Man armor. To me, this is a staple of the Iron Man legacy. When Stark just can't continue on, his best friend is there to carry on the fight. While I prefer Rhodey in the War Machine armor, there's something special about the way he puts on the red and golds to help his best bud when he's down.

7. Tony Stark gets an artificial nervous system. In the first Iron Man movie, repulsor technology was brilliantly re-imagined as a life-support system mixed with a massive energy source (in compact form, to boot). Another concept from the Iron Man comics that could use this touch is the artificial central nervous system Tony Stark implements in his own body following his faked death. It's especially fascinating to watch Tony code his own nervous system like he's writing software code.

6. The Hulkbuster armor. C'mon, you know you wanna see it too. This will probably have to wait for the Avengers movie, if that!

5. Tony Stark succumbs to alcoholism. Again, maybe this is best in a a sequel or another film. Like, if we see hints of it in Iron Man 2, even more hints in Avengers, and then Iron Man 3 showcases Tony's struggle - that might maximize the emotional impact. Still, I feel this plot should start in earnest with Iron Man 2.

4. The Blacklash costume. This costume is a classic supervillain faux pas, featuring a neon green ponytail in the cowl and hot pink / fuchsia in the body. It's so insane that I would love to see Iron Man 2 attempt it. BRING ON THE CHEESE! Alas, it appears that Whiplash will never progress into his insane Blacklash threads, however, because he's a hybrid of Whiplash AND Crimson Dynamo in Iron Man 2.

3. Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan hook up. Tony Stark is a man who can have just about any woman in the world... so what happens when the one woman he genuinely cares for decides she'd rather be with his driver / (non-armored) bodyguard? This is classic drama!

2. The Telepresence armor. Tony Stark is incapacitated, but that doesn't stop him from being Iron Man. Using technology that allows him to virtually pilot a suit of Iron Man armor, Tony remotely controls his infamous red and golds. There is still a risk, of course, because neural feedback from damage to the unmanned Neuromimetic Telepresence Unit can still manifest physically on Tony's end...

1. The War Machine armor. Luckily, I already know that my top choice is going to be in Iron Man 2. However, I am dismayed that the Comic-Con Int'l footage featured Rhodey getting his gear from Justin Hammer. Hopefully this is well weaved into the plot, because I think it's essential that Rhodey dons the suit to fight for right!!!

U.S.Agent vs. Iron Man Hyper Combo Wallpaper!

U.S.Agent throws his shield at Iron Man

U.S.Agent tussles with Iron Man, 1980s style!

DOWNLOAD WALLPAPER :: 1280 X 1024 :: 1440 X 900 :: 1600 X 1200

Last week, you though I was @#$%ing with you when I put up a U.S.Agent wallpaper. I was 100% legit with that - he's a secret character in Marvel vs. Street Fighter (as well as a "helper" character in MvC).

However, this week is a bit of a cheat. But not because of Iron Man's Silver Centurion armor - you can at least mimic the color scheme in Marvel Super Heroes on the PlayStation by holding the down button for five seconds while highlighting Iron Man, and then pressing a punch or kick button to select him as your fighter.

No, the cheat is actually this image, which is a depiction of Iron Man battling the Captain, not U.S.Agent. However, Steve Rogers wasn't the Captain for long, and the black and reds would soon belong to John Walker instead. You can just use your imagination to pretend he's already wearing them in this picture.

Thanks to Mark Bright, Bob Layton, and Bob Sharen for giving us this awesome art from Armor Wars' Iron Man #228. And thanks to Marvel Avalon for the image. This has been the second part of a U.S.Agent Double Shot, so be back next Monday for an unrelated Street Fighter Hyper Combo Wallpaper!
