War Machine vs. Living Laser Hyper Combo Wallpaper!

FIRST: There's kind of a long story behind my latest War Machine wallpaper. If you wanna read it, you can go to my Tumblr find out the deal.

AND: Suffice to say that by this point, the AudioShocker is the #1 War Machine fansite... amiright?!?! I mean, this is probably like my umpteenth War Machine blog post. Seriously. I don't think there's anyone else out there who actually cares this much, and that makes me both happy and sad.

NOW: On with the wallpaper! This beauty comes from the pages of Iron Man #289. Page 15 panel 1, to be exact. The Living Laser arrives at Stark Enterprises to throwdown with Tony Stark only to find Jim Rhodes has taken his place. Rhodey then offers the electric supervillain a job (as a ruse) and proceeds to sneak away so he can put on a kickass refractive suit of armor (covered in prisma-polymer laser-proofing, to be exact). Hijinks ensue.

Art is by Tom Morgan, Brad Vancata, and Ariane Lenshoek... and, uhhh, me. Sorta. See, I isolated Tom and Brad's linework so I could redo Ariane's colors (because the original image I had was kinda lo-res and not wallpaper worthy). In fact, here's a bonus wallpaper consisting solely of my recreation of Ariane's color art:

You'll be pleased to know that Iron Man #289 had a happy ending -- War Machine scrambled the Living Laser's particles and shot him out into deep space. Then Rhodey took off the armor and spent the next three days wondering if his actions made him a murderer. HAPPY!!!

Thanos Hyper Combo Wallpaper!

It boggles my mind to think that I haven't already posted Thanos wallpaper!!!

This image is from the first page of Silver Surfer #35, penciled by Ron Lim, inked by Tom Christopher, and colored by Tom Vincent:

For those of you who don't already know, Thanos made his first Capcom fighting game appearance as the boss in Marvel Super Heroes. And then he popped up again in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

In the comics, Thanos has battled the Avengers, Silver Surfer, Iron Man, Thor, and more. The Nihilist supervillain was created by Jim Starlin, and he broke out in a big way in the early 90s with the Infinity Gauntlet miniseries.

I could go on and on... but instead I'll just post another wallpaper!!! This one is from Marvel Super Heroes, as Thanos gets ready to face off against Shuma-Gorath.

If you're still craving more Thanos, here are some of his win quotes from MSH and here's a nifty little animated GIF of Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.

EDIT: MTV Geek used our version of the top Thanos image for their "who should play Thanos?" article. Nice steal, MTV!! BTW, for the record, I think Damion Poitier (the guy who played him in the Avengers movie) should also voice the character in his subsequent film appearances.

Still, I hope you've enjoyed this trip down memory as much as I have. See you next Monday for the new http://www.audioshocker.com/tag/hypercombocast!!

HyperComboCast #11 - Marvel, from comics to fighting games

HyperComboCast Podcast

Was Avengers in Galactic Storm the first Marvel fighting game! NO! It's a wonky digitized sprite affair with eight main characters and eight assist characters (one of the first with assist characters).

Thankfully, X-Men: Children of the Atom was the first Marvel fighting game! This classic Capcom fighter has gorgeous character design, a good selection of fighters, and tight animation.

Marvel Super Heroes (our favorite!) was next, and it took things to the next level. Fantastic obscure characters (Shuma-Gorath, Blackheart), killer art direction, awesome gameplay... EVERYTHING RULES!

X-Men vs. Street Fighter used the Marvel Super Heroes approach and runs wild with it in the very first Marvel/Capcom crossover game!

Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter is where things slip a little bit... and the secret characters are totally lazy re-colorations!

Then it's the first Marvel vs. Capcom!!! (Nick loves the gameplay). We get Venom and War Machine, and some color-themed secret characters.

As for non-Capcom releases... There's the very average X-Men: Mutant Academy 1 and 2. Plus, there's X-Men: Next Dimension, a slightly freshened up Mutant Academy... and Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects is sort of a fighting game.

But then we're onto Marvel vs. Capcom 2!!! Cable and Marrow join the fight... plus two Wolverines? And, ahhh...c'mon, you know the rest. Classic, yadda yadda, etc.

Fast-forward to now... Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Oodles of new characters! MODOK, Phoenix, Taskmaster, and tons more. Plus, some Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 conversation.

And after the end theme, we briefly discuss the rare adaptions of Marvel Comics story lines in fighting games -- Operation: Galactic Storm and Infinity Gauntlet.

NEXT: Star Wars fighting games! (Masters of Tesar Kasi and Soulcalibur IV)
