me: I think I found my next Girl I Want To Stick It To
ro: Oh yeah?
ro: Who
neal: Cute Female Vocalist aka Sara Bareilles / Aimee Mann / Fiona Apple / Regina Spektor
neal: well ok, Aimee Mann isn’t really “cute”
ro: CFV…where do you come up with this stuff?
Sara Bareilles may have a strong nose, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing and her music is accessible - which I like in my female vocalists. She writes songs that aren’t atrocious, spiked with vocoder, or full of the screechy notes that R&B divas are infatuated with.
Aimee Mann’s music is like Valium, and that combined with a shot of Jack Daniels is how I get through winter. Thanks Chris, (my roommate from freshman year) for introducing me.
Fiona Apple recorded the best music she ever would when she was 16, but it took me till I was 25 to realize it. That record gets a lot of play according to my iTunes stats. Fiona is sort of the antithesis of a PPG but that pout is pretty attractive.
And Regina! Regina Spektor is too cute for words and it’s disarming. One minute you’re listening to these sweet love songs and then BAM! she’s cursing like a sailor, singing about about ODing, and belting out funny ditties about people fucking to her music.
The conversation ended pretty abruptly since Ro was busy last week, but you get the point. Female vocalists and particularly those who play the piano, (do you play Aimee?), rank pretty high in my book. My friend Evan came to the same conclusion a year or two before I did and he won’t let me forget it.
Cute Female Vocalist, I’d love to help you warm up before the show. Don’t get it? How about this: I’d like to stick it to you.

Sorry folks, Nick and Justique are off this week. Podcast 18 will air next week. In their absence, I decided to try something new. I rounded up two of my favorite ladies, triathlete-in-training Rohini and Kirsten of Yumbrosia, for an oldschool AIM chat. Read on as we discuss The Lovemakers, Umbrella by Rihanna, The Decemberists, Rogue’s Gallery, Aimee Mann in the sack, the definition of cute, Chuck, Lost, Katherine Heigl, The Spirit of the Marathon, Biggest Loser, The Cutting Edge 3, and so so so much more!
Special Thanks to Kirsten for her excellent editing, Ro for her patience with AIM, and the continued Writer’s Strike for all the extra free time.
You have just entered room “AudioShocker!”
Ro has entered the room.
Kirsten has entered the room.
Neal: Ok. Well then. AudioShocker AIMcast 01
Kirsten: Cool
Ro: Woot
Neal: Nick couldn’t be here tonight because he’s on a cruise with his mom or something.
Ro: Will people read this?
Neal: I certainly hope so.

The writer’s strike has begun to affect more than just TV. I haven’t seen a decent music video premier is over a month. Much like late night TV, I have resorted to re-runs of classic videos from my youth. Do you remember the days when the Real World didn’t come on in 10 hour blocks and Busta Rhymes was making all those wild videos? No? Well, with the magic of YouTube I present: Neal’s Video Throwback. I hope these decade old morsels are fresh enough to slake your thirst during this ridiculous drought.
10. Basketcase - Green Day - 6th grade was a crazy time full of self-loathing and the noxious whiff of puberty. Sound familiar?
9. No Diggity - Blackstreet -This may have been one my first experience with booty dancers. It looks like they jacked Boyz II Men’s wardrobe for this video, but at least they weren’t sporting shiny suits.
8. Du Hast - Rammstein - Years before assclowns like SlipKnot were getting airplay, there was Rammstein. Tell me this doesen’t make you want to run into the street and slap a fat kid.
7. Glycerine - Bush - I feel like I could have put ANY Bush track from the first album here. The video might be ’simple’ by today’s standards, but this used to pass for a decent video 10 years ago.
6. Wonderwall - Oasis - Joke all you want, but I know you own this CD. I used to listen to this on gray rainy days. Seeing as how I grew up in Pittsburgh - you can imagine how often that was. This video went straight from MTV to VH1’s Pop-up Video. If that isn’t indicative of its massive popularity, I am not sure what is.
