Guess what I'm gonna write about today? I BET YOU CAN TELL FROM THE TITLE! Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Cycles and fads in pop culture. Actually, that's probably what I'll write about every time I do this column. But anyway, I digress. On with today's rant.

I feel like I'm living in strange times right now. Maybe it's my newfound reclusiveness, hiding out and working on my own comics everyday. Or maybe it's because things really are changing around me in a direction that I appreciate.

I remember back in the early to mid 00s, actions and items that I'd once considered eccentric cultural habits of mine became pop culture fads. Mesh hats, once worn as a joke by my friends and I, could be purchased at your local Hollister and were being worn by the people that used to tell me I looked like a "retard" for wearing them.

Raw garage rock became hot. Movies actually parodied things that I thought should be parodied. And for a brief time from 2004-2006, I thought top 40 radio was listenable. Hell, even mainstream comic books started producing crossovers that I thought were intriguing and insightful! Was it me changing to meet pop culture or was it pop culture changing around me?

Every few years, I feel in sync with pop culture. Then I fall painfully out of sync. Then I fall in again when I least expect it. Right now, I feel as though I've mistakenly fallen in again.

Marvel vs. Capcom -- once a niche game that I shared with my closest friends as a particular passion of mine -- has made a roaring resurgence. My fingers ache from online play. I would say I've spent more time playing it and talking about it this week than I've spent following world events... except it's an entertainment world event and I'm just one of the millions following it.

MvC3 is just an example of one thing I feel in sync with right now. The list goes on -- a plethora of weird animated films at the movies, Netflix streaming becoming the new way to watch media (b-movies!!!), superhero stories leading the forefront of mass entertainment, and concepts of freedom and tolerance becoming international norms for people that are tired of being held down by ignorant social structures.

So I wanna pose the question again -- is it me changing to meet the pop cultural status quo or has pop culture slowly cycled back to a place where I don't loathe it?

WHERE IN THE HELL IS MY MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3 SPECIAL EDITION THAT I ORDERED FROM YOU?

Here's what my tracking info currently tells me:

So let's get the facts straight... I ordered it on January 20th from the Capcom Store. On February 11th, I received an email from capcom.cs@digitalriver.com letting me know that my order had shipped. Everything sounds good so far, right?

On Wednesday, I decided to look up my tracking number using www.findmyorder.com (which was recommended in my shipping confirmation email). At the time, the last update was on February 14th. It was "In Transit" from Fishers, IN 46037. Okay, not terrible.

It's shipping from Indiana and going to Pennsylvania. Shouldn't take that long, right? And it's shipping via USPS. For example, last Saturday, my friend mailed me a large envelope 1st class from Los Angeles. It was at my apartment in Pittsburgh by Monday.

I checked again on Thursday. Nothing had been updated since MvC3 was "In Transit" on February 14th. That's kind of weird, right?

So I emailed Capcom Customer Service. And I got back a bullshit response that suggested the person didn't even read what I sent (or if they did, they certainly didn't act like it).

And here's the stinger -- "Please allow at least 7 -14 business days for delivery." HUH!?! I know that's the line places always give, but seriously... 7 to 14 days from Indiana to Pennsylvania? That's ludicrous.

What form of arcane Pony Express P.O.S. shipping is Capcom using that wouldn't log any activity since Monday? When I searched my tracking number on USPS, it said something about the package being shipped by a shipping partner. WHAT SHIPPING PARTNER WOULD TAKE THIS LONG?

About a week and a half ago, we first mentioned the possibility of a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 announcement here on the AudioShocker. Well, now it's official and that's exciting news because we're HUGE Marvel vs. Capcom fans here at this site (as evidenced by our weekly feature, Hyper Combo Wallpaper, which is basically a Marvel vs. Capcom tribute).

In light of this official MvC3 announcement, I'd like to pose this question to comic book and fighting game fans alike -- who do you want to see in Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

Me personally, I have a few favorites in mind that I think would make for excellent additions to the lineup. On the Marvel side, I'd like to see Black Panther, Havok, and She-Hulk join in on the ruckus. As for Capcom, I'm mostly a Street Fighter fan, so my nominations include E. Honda, Oro, and Crimson Viper.

Realistically, the choices on the Marvel side will probably be dictated by their movie slate. That would put Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, War Machine, Beast, Storm, Cyclops, and Magneto in there. I'm sure I missed a few, but those seem like the big Marvel choices.

Also, since MvC always seems to pull a "hot" character in from the comics (War Machine in MvC and Cable + Marrow in MvC2), that would probably make Deadpool an ideal addition to keep with this tradition. And, speaking of tradition, I hope that Capcom puts Captain Commando in MvC3 too!

IT REALLY EXISTS! The Street Fighter snuggie or cozy or whatever you wanna call it is not a myth and can be purchased (not online right now, but at least in stores).

Justique and I searched the Internet for one of these babies but couldn't find one. Only thing we could find was people talking about them, not selling them.

I read somewhere that you could find them at Hot Topic, but I ended up buying the last one at Spencer's today (HT didn't even have them, but they did tell us to go to Spencer's, so good looking out HT lady).

It's safe to say that Marvel vs. Capcom revived Captain Commando's career. Not that it was his first appearance by any means - he had his own self-titled game years before and he had graced Capcom packaging as a company mascot for many moons.

But the cyborg whose name was reverse-engineered from the Capcom moniker (Captain Commando) had his breakout role in MvC1. He made it into countless homes around the world thru the console versions of that game, and did the same all over again with MvC2. Thus he became the greatest captain of all-time (sorry, Steve)!

Ryu and E Honda are ready to throwdown old school!

Though Edmond Honda never made it into any of the Marvel vs. Capcom games, Ryu had his dirty little fingers all over them. But that's not what we're here to discuss today anyway. Above you will find a little old school fighting screen shot from the seminal Street Fighter II, complete in an old school arcade screen frame.

The hi-res source for this lo-fi classic was found in THE ARCADE COLLECTION of JESPER CARLSSON. It took me a bit of Photoshop magic, but I fixed the pic and made it into this delicious wallpaper. Be back next Monday for a Captain Commando Hyper Combo Wallpaper!

U.S.Agent tussles with Iron Man, 1980s style!

Last week, you though I was @#$%ing with you when I put up a U.S.Agent wallpaper. I was 100% legit with that - he's a secret character in Marvel vs. Street Fighter (as well as a "helper" character in MvC).

However, this week is a bit of a cheat. But not because of Iron Man's Silver Centurion armor - you can at least mimic the color scheme in Marvel Super Heroes on the PlayStation by holding the down button for five seconds while highlighting Iron Man, and then pressing a punch or kick button to select him as your fighter.

No, the cheat is actually this image, which is a depiction of Iron Man battling the Captain, not U.S.Agent. However, Steve Rogers wasn't the Captain for long, and the black and reds would soon belong to John Walker instead. You can just use your imagination to pretend he's already wearing them in this picture.

Khoi Pham delivers mighty U.S.Agent action

I bet you're really confused right now. U.S.Agent isn't in any of the Marvel vs. Capcom games, right? WRONG! John Walker just happens to be a secret character in Marvel vs. Street Fighter. Need proof? Check out my victory pics.

To play as U.S.Agent (who is just a recolored Captain America with slightly faster moves) on the PlayStation version of MvSF, highlight M. Bison on the character select screen and hold down the select button as you push any of the punch or kick buttons (depending on which button you hit, you'll get a different costume color - I think the triangle (a.k.a. default light punch) button gives you the classic black and red suit).

Omar Dogan makes Chun-Li look legendary

Chun-Li goes beyond Street Fighter Legend - she's a Marvel vs. Capcom Legend (and a straight up video game legend) too. The wallpaper you see here is a collage of UDON's covers for Street Fighter Legends: Chun-Li #1-3, three excellent installments from my new favorite comic book miniseries. For you Street Fighter completists out there, this wallpaper also features Gen and Lei Fong (NOT in MvC), and Dan Hibiki (who pops up in Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter).

On a personal note, this was the most difficult wallpaper making experience I've ever had for the Hyper Combo Wallpaper series. The above image you see is a miniature representation of the 1440 X 900 size, but the 1280 X 1024 and 1600 X 1200 sizes look a little different. They had tons of blank space above the image, so I slapped the Street Fighter Legends: Chun-Li logo up top.

Armor Wars goes Ultimate this September

Ahhh, Marvel Sutdios. I've figured out your little secret: Iron Man 2 is going to be the cinematic debut of Armor Wars. Wanna know how I figured it out? It was easy. I just looked at the Marvel Comics publishing schedule. See, both the Marvel Adventures and the Ultimate imprints are releasing their version of Armor Wars over the next few months. Why? Because they need to have graphic novels accessible to all types of fans when the film hits! Damn, I wouldn't be surprised if the movie is called Iron Man 2: Armor Wars.

Here we have Tony Stark inside his Ultimate Iron Man armor. The Marvel vs. Capcom series was a weird bird for Tony, as they used him at first, but then ditched him for MvC1. Then they brought him back for MvC2, but everyone was still more excited about War Machine as a fighter by then.

Captain America gets reborn by Joe Quesada

The Marvel vs. Capcom series has a great wealth of fighters. But from the beginning, I've only had one favorite: Steve Rogers, Captain America. I've been playing as Cap at the arcade and at home for as long as I can remember. He never lets me down.

Cap is coming back. In fact, Reborn #1 hits shelves this Wednesday and that's why we're gracing you with this awesome Joe Quesada, Danny Miki, and Richard Isanove variant cover. From what I understand, this cover won't be available for a few more weeks. But here's a little taste to get you pumped for the Reborn reprint, I suppose!

Ye olde fist of War Machine is coming at cha, baby!

Obviously I have some sort of weird addiction to War Machine. He's in about 50% of all the Hyper Combo Wallpapers I've ever published. And my love for Marvel vs. Capcom certainly doesn't diminish my infatuation with War Machine whatsoever.

While browsing the Internet for more hi-res Rhodey art, I stumbled upon an early Dan Slott issue - What If? #63: What if War Machine Had Not Destroyed the Living Laser? The art you see here is courtesy Manny Galan. I extracted the War Machine image from the cover, Photoshopped it at a high DPI using the cutout filter, and ended up with the excellent desktop wallpaper you see here.

I love special characters. I especially love unlockable characters that retain a familiar element while introducing a new theme. Marvel vs. Capcom features Orange Hulk, who is basically a slightly faster and stronger version of the classic Jade Giant. He's not the most ingenious special character... but still tons of fun.

An illustration by Ed McGuinness, this picture comes from the new Hulk series (which is getting turned back to the original series numbering any day now). In its unaltered form, this picture has Rulk on the left and Hulk on the right. I Photoshopped Rulk to be Orange Hulk and PRESTO!

Well, you, my friend, thought wrong. Ken may not be in MvC1 in person, but his moves are still there. Just hold down the "Select" button when you choose Ryu as your character, and you'll be fighting with Ken's moves. Personally, I think it's one of the best ways to play MvC. And for those of you who aren't special character inclined, you can play as Ken in every other game from the Marvel vs. Capcom series... so go get kicking!!!

In the Marvel vs. Capcom games, Spider-Man is what I like to call a "clutch character." Basically, that means if Justique is kicking my ass with Jin or Pete is running me with Venom, I go to Spidey to help me get some payback. I typically only call on Peter Parker when I need that extra boost.

This wallpaper is penciled by Joe Quesada, inked by Danny Miki, and colored by Richard Isanove. It comes from the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #544, from the controversial One More Day story arc.

You know who else is excited? Doctor Doom. Yep, Victor von Doom loves being a special character in Marvel Super Heroes. On the PS1, beat the game with any character and go to the character selection screen. Go to Captain America. Tap "down" twice and hold it. Then hit and hold the following buttons in this order (while holding "down"): "light kick," "medium kick," and "hard kick." VOILA! Pure Doom. He's also in MvC2, but you know how I feel about THAT game...

Wallpaper of War Machine on a Tank... Wait, He is the Tank!

Okay, so the image above doesn't fully convey the insanity of War Machine being plopped on top of a tank and using it for a pair of glorified (and deadly) legs. But the 1280 X 1024 and 1600 X 1200 versions of this wallpaper capture the moment a bit better than the 1440 X 900 that you see here.

If I had to give it a name... I guess I would call this War Machine's Dark Reign armor. It comes to us courtesy of illustrator Leonardo Manco and colorist Jay David Ramos. The source? An interior page from War Machine (vol 2) #2.

I have a feeling that this image will become an infamous touchstone in Rhodey's career for years to come... for better or worse. Take some notes, Marvel vs. Capcom. Special move for the (elusive) third installment, perhaps?

Whoa boy! A few firsts going on this week with the Hyper Combo Wallpaper. Rest assured that we're still bringing you your favorite characters from the Marvel vs. Capcom series. That's just what we do. But we're kicking it up a notch this time with three different sizes of wallpaper!!!

We're also bringing you the first of a three-part War Machine wallpaper series. AND this is the first time we're using non-Capcom art for the wallpaper! This week's shot is from the cover of Iron Man #283, by penciler (and War Machine co-creator) Kevin Hopgood, inker Bob Wiacek, and (maybe?) colors by Mike Rockwitz (he did the interiors, so maybe he did the cover too).

Granted, well-read Iron Man fans will know that this week's image is a bit of a cheat. This armor was never worn by James "Rhodey" Rhodes himself... it was only worn by Tony Stark. By the time Rhodey slapped on the suit in Iron Man #284, it was redesigned and modified with a few more toys. But Tony is in both Marvel Super Heroes and Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, so this DOES count.

I'm not saying that I expected an Oscar winner. Obviously, that was going to be lame flick - but this was overly lame. The best part is when Bison starts using one of his henchpeople as a puching bag - literally. A little iMDB work exposes the real issue: The director, Andrzej Bartkowiak. Everything he touches turns into garbage. His resume includes such stinkers as DOOM, Cradle 2 The Grave, and Exit Wounds. Perhaps if DMX and Anthony Anderson had played Balrog and Vega, things would have been different. Sadly, this one was DOOMed from the start. Lastly, whoever did the costumes for this movie should be shot. - just my personal opinion.

This Hyper Combo Wallpaper features my three favorite playable Marvel characters from Marvel vs. Capcom. Capcom switched from Iron Man to War Machine in this fighting game, and I love the change. Captain America is a perennial favorite of mine, always holding up well against the best of characters. And Gray Hulk? Well, personally, I just like him better in his Joe Fixit colors. (Gray is Hulk's secondary costume choice in MvC... select the character using your kick buttons.)
