Sequential Underground #84 – Am I An Artist?

Sequential Underground

Shawn Atkins and Nick Marino

Devon Purkiss

Show Notes:

Devon, creator of The Cowboy and the Goliath, inspired this episode’s topic with his recent deviantART journal where he asked: Am I an artist or do I just ‘like’ art?

Shawn and Nick help Devon explore his existential question, pondering the implications of influences, artistic movements, work habits, and the process of transitioning from a comics fan to a comics creator.

Also, don’t miss Shawn and Nick’s new collaboration (a six-page Super Haters story) starting next Monday, Feb 17! It’s called HaterMania. Here’s a trailer for it.

This was a very thought provoking episode. There are lots of things I want to comment on but I’m sure I won’t remember everything. First, I would ask myself if I was an artist all the time but not so much anymore. Personally, I feel that someone can only consider themselves an artist when they can successfully evoke emotion with their work. I don’t feel like I’m at that level of being an “artist” yet, but I don’t really care anymore. I enjoy telling stories so that’s what I do. I am getting better and better by each passing day but I sky don’t feel it yet.

Secondly, I’m really annoyed with all this Michael Bay hate. The first Transformers movie is just as goofy as the rest of them. It’s a mindless sci fi action movie based on kids toys. Who the hell cares? I could care less if Michael Bay makes bad movies based on old franchises, my opinion of that franchise will remain he same, no matter how many bad films are made.

Thirdly, I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NINJA TURTLES MOVIE. I can only hope that it will be as amazingly horrible as I think it will be. Also, I’m loving Ross Campbell’s run the TMNT comic. I feel the IDW TMNT series is by far the best book on the shelves. It’s what makes me excited to go to the comic store every few weeks.

Lastly, I still try to watch just about every movie based on a comic because that’s what a love. Personally, I think marvel studios has been producing some of my favorite movies since they started. I think Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be one the best movies all year.

Personally, I think it doesn’t matter if artistic inspirations show through or not as long as you bring your own expression into it (rather than just copying). Of course, sometimes it can be good to “try on” someone elses style to learn from it and keep things interesting too.

What’s really fun, though, is when someone tells you that your style reminds them of such-and-such artist and you’re like “Who??”

@Chris: Interesting view on what it takes to be an artist. At times in my life, I used to also define being an artist as evoking emotion. But in the past few years, my definition has changed a lot.

Justique (AudioShocker host, my GF) and I have been talking about it a lot in the past year and I now I think her definition has become my current definition: someone who creates work (or creates an experience) while being vulnerable and taking risks. I’m sure I butchered her far superior wording, but that’s the gist of it. Basically, it needs to have both of those factors.

At first I disagreed with her. But when I tried to pick evidence to counter her definition, I couldn’t think of anything! A performer or a craftsperson will take risks OR show vulnerability with their work, but doing both makes someone an artist.

I’m not saying I’ll always hold this definition, but it’s where I’m at right now.

@Carrie: I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS! Not because I’m offended but because I’m thinking “here it goes again… I’m like ‘such and such’ artist but this time I don’t even know who the fuck they are!” And sometimes I’ll be like “WHO?!?” and the other person gives me this skeptical look like “don’t try and deny it it” but I’m like “Seriously… who?!?!?!?”
