Show Notes:

With Kickstarter now an accepted part of promoting and publishing indie comics, it’s become common for cartoonists to take part in communal crowdfunding campaigns for anthologies and other group projects.

On this podcast, we discuss our experiences as participants in group campaigns that were run by someone else. We also have a call-in from a manager of community Kickstarter campaigns, Brian John Mitchell. He’s a cartoonist and self-publisher who’s run multiple campaigns featuring the work of many different artists.

Along with detailing our personal experiences, we also share our tips for navigating the ups and downs of crowdfunding for a group project, including our opinions on promotion and social media outreach.

Kickstarter is amazing. I was very nervous about doing a campaign but it worked out perfect. I can tell after only doing one campaign, that each campaign is a new learning experience. I will do things much differently someday when I decide to do another. Congratulations on your successful project. I NEED TO SEE THIS BIBLE 2.

the impression i’ve gotten from all of my friends who’ve managed campaigns is that each one presents different challenges and pretty much all of them are more work than they expected.

did you and Matthew equally run the campaign together or was one of you more responsible for it? i’m curious about the particular challenges you faced since it was just the two of you.

I’m almost done lettering The Graphic Novel Formerly Known As The Bible 2, so hopefully I’ll have more juicy news soon ;)

Matthew and I equally promoted it. We talked about Matthew doing the bulk of the promotion so I could focus on the art when we first started but I couldn’t help but do whatever I could to promote it every way possible.

Cool. It’s nice to know that both of you were able to share the responsibility and the success.
