A Podcast with Kaylie and Nick #163 - Outlaws

A Podcast with Kaylie and Nick

First off... GO SUPPORT THE VACANT KICKSTARTER by Heethar Noonully. Okay, did you give it money? Good. Now we may proceed.

After Kaylie McDougal confesses her hatred for Bill Murray and Nick Marino drops a shoutout to illustrator Summer Suzuki, we BARF up a storm with ALF s1 e23 and ALF s1 e24! Kaylie got screencaps and Nick got screencaps.

Next up, Kaylie and Nick talk about their respective reasons for why they hate getting haircuts. Then Nick shares a whimsical review of his recent Nik Furious EP and talks about pitching to SlothPunchClub.com.

That transitions into a discussion about naming characters, which leads into Kaylie's new comics project. It's a sci-fi mystery inspired by Heavy Rain.

After the end theme, we review (with SPOILERS!) The More They Stay Insane by Skipper Martin, Adam Huntley, Michael Spicer, and Thomas Mauer. It's a challenging psychological western tale from Outlaw Territory Vol. 3, now available digitally from Comixology, this Wednesday in American comic shops, and July 9 from Amazon.

Next: We finish off the first season with ALF s1 e25 and ALF s1 e26. And then we review the critically acclaimed utterly obscure Disco Worms.

I have the answer for the Alf intro! I noticed the change in the intro too and it turns out there two versions of the season 1 intro, the one where it as the shot of kate putting a pie in the fridge and the music is seemingly sped up is actually the original and then when the episodes got syndicated the shortened the intro a bit and slowed down the music a tad and that is the version people are most familiar with. I don't why they they keep switching between the two on the episodes.

I really like ep 24 too because it pretty does encompass everything that is Alf, it is one the few episodes that actually has a good moral in it and has some really good humor in it too. I rate it one my favorites as well.

Nick, I'd say your music is "whimsical" "fun" etc. in the way Mike Allred's art is.

It's not necessarily experimental, but it's both very unique and has a sense of fun to it,. In general it demonstrates far more range than a mere servicable effort, yet at the same time it's pretty outta step with contemporary mainstream music, but not unrecognizable via elements like the synth tones, production, etc.

....And i'd totally draw that muff bot story, sounds fucking hilariously awesome.

These star astronauts or whatever, how cool would it be if they are older male astronauts, who came to fame before the muff-bot-singularity, as you said they didn't have the resources focused there after. Seeking the same glory they had in their youth (and secretely lusting for the gentle kiss of the muff bot, now wholly absent from terra firma) these aged explorers hopped up on viagra and a bitter rivalry that dates bakc decades just go to town on the planet of muff-bots, like vultrimites of sex.

@Kim: That's crazy!!!! Wow. I never would've believed the sped up intro was the original unless you came through with that fact check.

Yeah, e24 is so good. I ranked it as my #5 favorite episode of ALF on a list I wrote back in 2009 (I'd link to the list but I don't want Kaylie to read it until we're done with BARF!!!).

@Nick: I can't disagree with that assessment!! It sounds pretty spot on to me. I still wouldn't use the word whimsical, but then again I almost never use that word. Thx for sharing your thoughts about my music!!!

As for the muffbot story... FUCK YEAH!!! Let's collaborate! I'm talking to my co-writer tomorrow, so I'll lob the idea at him and see if he wants to dust it off (we haven't worked on the story in at least 3 years). Gimme a few days and I'll email you about it. Can I send stuff to the email you use for commenting on the AudioShocker?

Great episode! I also hate cutting my hair I've had shoulder long hair and I still feel bad about cutting it of. Right now I pretty much shave or cut my hair when my girlfriend gets annoyed. I'd love to read both Kaylie's new thing and the Muffbot story. Maybe you should like ask different artist to do a chapter of the muffbot story. I also think that you could totally set the story in the distant future of to 2007.

  11. 9 nick marino

@Daniel: hahahahaa i like that -- the distant future of 2007. also, good idea with different artists doing different chapters.

you should tell your girlfriend to shave or cut her hair whenever you have to do it. that seems fair.

man, Nick, you're so lucky! i wish i could just be like "i wanna work on blah blah blah but i need a collaborator!" and then great artists come outta the woodwork wanting to do it XD

@Kaylie: heh heh yeah i've been lucky so far. but you're only seeing the successful part!!! i've pitched muffbot to at least a dozen artists in the past five years and never even made it to sketches. same goes with a shit ton of other ideas i haven't talked about on the podcast that have been pitched to more artists than i can count!

@Nick: YOUR ART IS SICK!!! I love the architecture and linework in Zion. I'm stoked that you're interested in learning more about the Muffbot story.

  19. 15 Brandon!

Awwww Kaylie you kinda broke my heart a bit with your dislike of Bill Murray! No I'm kidding, but here's a good Bill Murray story. Now this is handed down from a friend of a friend, but given Mr. Murray's reputation for dropping in on college parties and such makes me believe it's true.

So this kid, we'll call him Ryan is riding a Chicago train late late at night. It's like 4:00am post partying type of night. So he's on this train and there's only like two or three other people on board, and one of the passengers standing fairly close is an older gentleman dressed in a suit. He's not wearing a tie and his shirt is unbuttoned at the top, after a few minutes of observing this man Ryan comes to the conclusion that it is in fact Bill Murray! He thinks to himself pssh no way it can't be him. So he keeps scoping this guy out trying to find out if his suspicion is true. The man notices Ryan looking at him, but pretends not to. The train is about to reach the next stop, Ryan is fully convinced that it's Bill Murray by now, and is trying to think of something to say to him. The train reaches the stop and the man is about to leave the train, when he stops walks right up to Ryan grabs him by the shoulders and says " No one's going to believe you!" and then he leaves.

Did I draw that out enough? ^_^

@Nick: that's true, i'm just glad that after so many attempts you've managed to quite easily get talented artists interested through your podcasting. :) it's a beautiful thing!

@Brandon: haha sorry i let you down! XD i wouldn't say i hate Bill Murray, or most anyone; i don't really care enough to "hate" anyone, haha, i just don't understand the hype, i guess. that's an awesome story about your friend; maybe that's why Bill Murray is so popular, especially with the college-aged crowd, is there's this aura of mystery and kind of urban legend about him? like MAYBE Bill Murray will show up at your shitty college house party or something, haha. i dunno. i guess i just get tired of his gimmicky-ness, like i was trying to explain to Nick he just comes off as so one-note to me. and there's the whole thing with his spousal abuse, that makes me feel icky about anyone. but that's just me, no offense to people for whom Bill Murray is like their favorite actor ever. XD i'm just a bitter jerk who hates almost everything, haha.

  22. 17 nick marino

@Kaylie: You're right!! It is beautiful.

    @Brandon: That's a funny story. I've read it before, but I don't remember where.
