A Podcast with Kaylie and Jason #155 - Mystery Monsters

A Podcast with Kaylie and Nick

We Google our names to learn more about our infamous doppelgangers, like the Australian Kaylie McDougal, Mr. Palm Springs Leather 2008 Nick Marino (NSFW!), keyboardist Nick Z Marino, and power pop balladeer Nick Marino.

But the real Kaylie McDougal and Nick Marino soon emerge -- along with special guest Jason K Averill -- to review ALF s1 e5 and ALF s1 e6 for a little something we like to call Blazing ALF Retro Fantastic (BARF).

ALF gets a job selling makeup and befriends a blind woman in two decent episodes. Kaylie's got 'caps and Nick's got 'caps so following along for mucho ALFer fun!!

Then we tackle the monstrosity that is Goobers!, a terrible b-movie originally released in 1997 as Mystery Monsters. Go buy it on Amazon if you're bold enough!

We tear into this kids flick for its missing momentum, over-abundance of talking heads, and general lack of quality. Nick made screencaps (part 1 and part 2). And Kaylie dubs this film her Garbage Pail Kids because it nearly broke her for good.

Next: Flashback with ALF s1 e7 and flashdance with ALF s1 e8.

Thanks for having me! Maybe a somewhat less soul-crushing flick for my next time though? ;)

    Also, speaking of movie posters:

such a good episode!!!!! so funny!! Kaylie, you were on fire again. "i hesitate to call this a movie" hahaha. i really have to see this Goobers movie, it sounds nuts. i love the Alf stuff too even though i haven't seen any of it, it's really entertaining listening to you guys.

my thing with GPK wasn't that i ever liked it, i always hated it but i could still get through the movie on a purely masochistic level where the movie was an awful curiosity or whatever, but for some reason that viewing broke me (i think that was my 5th or 6th time seeing it).

    THX ROSSSSSSSSS!!!

i was wondering if you'd be interested in this new idea i have for a podcast... see, every week you and i would watch The Garbage Pail Kids Movie and discuss it, unlocking deeper and deeper meaning from the film, analyzing its every moment and trying to understand what it really means. we could call it the Garbage Pod Kids or something like that. interested?

but i dunno about you watching Goobers!... the film's biggest problem is that the concept rocks but the execution is really dull. so even though we laughed a lot, it was super hard to pull out the funny moments because on the whole it's really boring.

on a positive note, i started watching a great talking animal film the other night -- Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts. apparently it's the fifth Dr. Dolittle movie?!?!? and the actress who played Eddie Murphy's daughter (the main character in the last three films) is in all five of them, same with Norm MacDonald as the voice of her dog. she can talk to animals and this Paris Hilton-esque heiress finds out and wants to put her on a reality show. it's really great, weird shit. and apparently the fourth film was called Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief, which sounds fucking fantastic if you ask me.

i get it. the whole dumpster sketch thing.
human history is filled with tons of great works of art that were thrown away by someone who didn't appreciate art.
or maybe they thought something bad happened to you.
or maybe someone was just curious, imagine what it must have looked like, a bunch of sketch books all lumped together. it had to look like someone (like a spiteful ex) had thrown all your stuff out.

wow... goobers really messed kaylie up.
    heh...
i can't think of any movie that has just messed me up like that.
    i think.

@Smars: Maybe I'm just a callous bastard but I don't know that I would spend more than 10 seconds pondering where a pile of sketchbooks or art came from if I found it in the dumpster.

Nearly every artist I know at some point just has to chuck their sketch books and old art because all it does is sit around and pile up. I mean, what are you gonna do with it otherwise?

And trust me -- these sketchbooks were not great works of art getting thrown away!! hahaha
