A Podcast with Nick and Kelly #148 - Desert Island

A Podcast with Ross and Nick

What's your desert island TV show? We're talking one TV show -- the only TV show you could ever watch again -- while you're stranded on a desert island for the rest of your life. Nick Marino wants to know!

But Kelly Thompson doesn't wanna talk about desert islands. She wants to talk about X-Men: The Animated Series episodes #67-68 (s5 e1-2 on Netflix), for which Ross made a GIF and Nick made some screencaps.

Then Ross Campbell wants to hear about your desert island food... the only food you can eat for the rest of your life! And Nick wants to know your desert island team of five X-Men... the only five X-Men you could ever read about again!!

After that, Kelly goes on a massive image hunt for the perfect desert island PEZ dispenser. See the fruits of Kelly's spectacular search here and here and here.

We've all changed our Twitter icons to awful PEZ dispensers for the next week.

ALSO:

Next: Be back in one week for the Storm Front two-parter in X-Men: The Animated Series episodes #69-70 (s5 e7-8 on Netflix).

In the 1980s when I was reading all the Marvel stuff, I'm pretty certain Forge was his last name & his first name was not revealed, though his first name may have been revealed (I'm going to guess as Jonathan) in that series The 'Nam during the era where there are a few of the non-powered older Marvel characters like The Punisher appearing in it.

For the desert island X-Men I'd go ahead & go with the original line-up. In part because I have only ever read one issue of the pre-giant era & I should know more about it. But for a dream team that I would have a chance to put a good writer behind, I guess I'd go with Magneto, Colossus, Magick, Archangel version of Angel, the 1980s Rachel Phoenix. Do they ever have Magneto do things with him manipulating Colossus like Plastic Man?

I think 'Jade' is a pretty good example of those 90s erotic thrillers nick was mentioning. Also maybe Basic Instinct for one that most people know.

One piece of Alf trivia I like is how it's mentioned in the film version of 'lord of the flies.'

My desert island food would probably be Nerds. And my five man X-men team (going mostly on my impression of the animated series) would be Cyclops, Wolverine, and Jean Grey. But in a timeline where there are extra copies of Cyclops and Wolverine because: in the future they get into a fight over Jean and accidentally fall into Beast's experimental time machine, which sends them back in time.

Damn, Ross stole my desert island tv show! MST3K would be the best.

For X-men team, can I just choose Peter David's X-Factor Investigations run?

Desert island food: A lamb french dip with swiss cheese and cole-slaw from Phillipe's.

TV series: Batman TAS or Red Dwarf

X-men: and this was really tough are Shadowcat, Storm, Psylocke, Gambit and Nightcrawler

Food: Buffalo wings with blue cheese

@Ross Animal from the Muppets is far superior to all of Sesame Street.

@Kelly I hate rats as well. Filthy little buggers!

@Brian: I didn't know that some of the superheroes showed up in The 'Nam!! Also, I like the idea of Magneto bending Colossus to accomplish superhero-y tasks. Honestly, I think there's some type of thing like Mageneto has limited ability when it comes to controlling Colossus. Some type of MacGuffin like that.

@Mark: I haven't seen Jade but it sounds like a decent erotic thriller from the plot. One example I thought of (but kinda of a shitty, corny one) is Dirty Little Trick starring Dean Cain. Hilarious.

I didn't know ALF got name-dropped in LotF!!

I like your multiple versions of characters X-Men team.

@Jason: NOOOO!!! You have to pick five of the characters from the run. Can't have 'em all.

And you totally cheated on the food too!! YOU CAN'T HAVE A SIDE DISH!!! Hahaha.

@Marques: Whoa. Weird X-Men team! I dig it. BUT... I really can't stand Kitty Pryde. What do you find appealing about the character? I've always struggled to connect with her.

    Nick: Shadowcat is awesome.

    Marques: Rats are the worst!

Mark/Nick: From what Nick is describing I think Jade is a step up from what he's talking about (same with Basic Instinct)...the Dean Cain example tells me this even more clearly!

@kelly/nick: agreed, dean cain is a force of nature, but he needs a role that plays to his strengths

also, just wanted to put it out there. I think kevin smith is a douchenozzle and I can't stand his skorts. but can you really fault his show if it's simply a reflection of many (seemingly) people's gripe with comics fans.

My guess is that the Dean Cain movie is a bit trashier and b-movie than Jade or Basic Instinct. But then again I'm not very good at recognizing "quality" in filmmaking to begin with, so I wouldn't take my word for it!!

Some of my other favorite erotic thrillers:

    - Masquerade: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095599/

    - Bad Influence: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099091/

    - Blue Seduction: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1337040/

I think Ross and I were supposed to talk about Blue Seduction on the podcast about a year ago. Actually, we may have talked about it but just as a passing mention. I can't find it in any of the show notes.

  14. 11 Marques

@Nick its not that I find her appealing (her power for sure is). I guess I picked her just because I didn't think Bishop would fit in with all the others. Maybe i'm wrong.

  15. 12 anj

tv show: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. just because i personally cant get sick of it. i'm on my third or fourth re-watch and i'm still noticing new things about each episode.

x-men team: evo!Scarlet Witch, Rogue, Mystique, Nightcrawler and... Storm.

    food: is coffee a food?

  16. AudioShocker Shoutouts!

  17. 13 nick marino

@Marques: I think Bishop would totally fit!!!! That line up would be really similar to one of my favorite runs of Uncanny X-Men - Claremont, Bachalo, and Tan in the mid-00s:

@anj: Whoa!!! That team rules!!! There would be so much tension. Mother, adopted daughter, abandoned son, unpredictability, and reliability. I would read that in a heartbeat.

I guess coffee's a food... I mean, you could chew roasted coffee beans.

This was one of the most hilarious episodes I've listened to so far. I like the off subject talk as long as it doesn't run too long. Flow of conscience is entertaining. Also:

Desert Island Food: Pizza (seriously you can put anything on it)

thanks again for the comments, you guys!!

Nick, we were both wrong on Anole's name pronunciation, it's uh-NOE-lee. O_o i've been saying it AN-ole all these years, as in the lizard, not the character. how come nobody ever corrected me? i guess anoles aren't really a big conversation topic.
