AFI 100 Years 100 Movies Podcast #24 – A Grape Odyssey

AFI Movies Podcast

Conrad and Nick continue their careful climb up the AFI 100 list!

25. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Conrad likes it. Nick prefers Mac and Me.

24. Raging Bull (1980)

BOOOOOOORING!!! Why it’s this high on the list (not to mention ranking at #4 on the revised list) is beyond us.

23. The Maltese Falcon (1941)

Conrad likes it. Nick thinks the plot is too slow and the talking is too fast.

22. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

This movie was probably awesome back when LSD was still new and exciting. Nowadays, it’s pretty dull. Also, slow plot and fast talking.

21. The Grapes of Wrath (1940)

Way better than we expected!! In fact, pretty goddamn good.

NEXT: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Chinatown, Psycho, and The General.

haha i’m glad i’m not the only one in my generation who doesn’t care for E.T. :)

i’ve never seen Raging Bull, and from the description i’m not sure i will, haha. but it seems to me like maybe the point of the story of the movie is maybe that the rage that fills this guy that drives away everyone he cares about is what also makes him the best boxer? like, it’s a double-edged sword kind of thing. it’s kind of an interesting concept, but i’m not sure how you make an entire movie out of it…obviously someone likes it, heh.

i completely agree about Space Odyssey…it’s one of those movies i felt obligated to watch just because it’s referenced in pop culture so much, but i found it really confusing and boring. the visuals and cinematography are amazing like Kubrick’s stuff always is, but like Conrad said, i just don’t “get” it. :/

i haven’t seen Maltese Falcon or Grapes of Wrath. is the General movie the one starring Buster Keaton? it’s great! though i’m a big Buster Keaton fan, so maybe i’m biased. it’s worth watching just for Buster’s insane stunt work.
