AudioShocker Podcast #215 - Exploratory Thingies

AudioShocker Podcast

Neal went to Seattle and met a lot of people who agreed that Portland is exactly like Portlandia. He also talks about Netflix's first original series, Lilyhammer.

Plus, Neal's been watching RuPaul's Drag Race and he now recognizes the grave importance of slappin' a bitch. Meanwhile, Nick saw Chronicle. He was initially impressed... but upon deeper thought was unimpressed.

One of these characters dies in Chronicle... bet ya can't guess which one!!!

Then technical difficulties begin to prey on the recording. After stops and starts, Neal talks about how airlines now want you to pay for in-flight entertainment...

...which somehow leads to a conversation about going back and changing entertainment -- like the way George Lucas changed the Star Wars films or the way the Beastie Boys (according to Neal... internet verification of this is hard to find) have changed their lyrics. And Nick admits that while he's made some music in the past that he's not always 100% proud of, he'd never go back and change it.

ok ok ok ok ok ok ok

it's more that they are apologizing for previously insensitive lyrics rather than changing stuff after the fact -- but i stand by my point, don't apologize or feel remorse for dumb shit you did in the past --- if it got you to where you are today. so yeah.

you think Ice-T is all like "Damn, I really shouldn't have recorded Cop Killer"? No. He's probably like "Damn, I play a wise-cracking SVU Detective on NBC because I'm famous!!"

I gotta disagree. When the Beastie Boys came out and said "you know what? that misogynist stuff we used to do was dumb" I gained a lot of respect for them. And after that, their music got a hundred times better (more ill, if you will) than it ever was before, because they had grown up and got focused on being super dope at their craft rather than just being loud and obnoxious.

I gotta agree with Paul on this one. I think it shows that the Beasties have matured as both people and artists. And it's a bold thing to do considering how many other hip hop artists have done the same thing with their lyrics but never copped to the ignorance of it.

Even though my Unlicensed Attorneys at Law rhymes are satire and none of it's meant to be taken seriously, I've still said some ignorant shit on some of those older songs. While I'd never change any of the recordings, I'm sorry for the stupid shit I said and if I were to ever perform those songs live, I'd definitely find better rhymes to put in there. Would I still make em funny and irreverent? Yeah. But not hateful or maliciously ignorant.

Neal, i get what you mean, it's fine to have a stance on this, but i think you can't really appreciate something like this or understand it until you've created a work that's out there publicly which you later regret or feel embarrassed by. it's easy to be on the sidelines and say "don't change that!" when you haven't experienced something like this yourself. or maybe you have and i'm wrong in assuming you haven't, if so i apologize!!

hehehe i'm pretty sure Neal would say that he's embarrassed by a vast majority of old AudoiShocker podcasts :) and maybe some UAL stuff, too.
