A Podcast with Ross and Nick: Greatest Hits v1

As you may know, A Podcast with Ross and Nick has gone bimonthly. Personally, I'm still adjusting to our new schedule and I miss our usual weekly occurrence! To slow my withdrawal and sate my appetite for ridiculous conversation, I've decided to compile a short list of some of our most popular and interesting episodes:

  • Episode #22 - Personality Poetry - According to our podPress statistics, this episode has the most listens! While I find over 6,000 plays to be a slightly dubious figure, I'm sure it does have more listens than some of our other less popular episodes (*ahem* Future Garbage *ahem*). Ross and I spend most of this episode discussing superhero personalities and editing Wikipedia, not to mention crafting some haiku poetry.
  • Episode #40 - The Turtlecast, pt 4 - We wrap up our original four-part Turtlecast series by talking about TMNT video games, the Turtles Artobiography, and the infamous Coming Out of Our Shells tour. We also share our first official listener feedback, and some of our most classic listeners stop by in the comments.
  • Episode #55 - Guro Thrasher - Our second most popular episode of all time! Again, the stats are suspect... but similar to Episode #32, I can guarantee that this one is largely popular due to the "fan art effect" (our podcasts that link to sexy fan art images always get more visits than our other podcasts). Anyway, this episode is unique because it's actually the second take because the first try didn't properly record. Also, the guro theme of the show sparked a really interesting conversation in the comments. Featuring Justique.
  • Episode #74 - Episode 6cast - Six episodes into the EXTREME challenge and we're already going crazy from the pain. We discuss a horrible Wolverine solo episode of X-Men: The Animated Series as well as Return of the Jedi. Oh, and it all starts with Ross's squeaky fridge. Featuring Justique.
  • Episode #80 - Future Garbage - Originally, I was planning on putting Episode #82 in this spot, but I changed my mind because this is the infamous episode that officially broke Ross's spirit by forcing him to rewatch The Garbage Pail Kids Movie. Plus, our conversation of X-Men:TAS episode 13 is really funny. Featuring Justique, Kaylie, and Kelly.

If I didn't include your favorite episodes on this list, let me know! I chose these shows based upon a few different factors: number of listens, content of the conversation, and the era during which it was recorded. Anyway, this is only "v1" because we have a ton of other good shows that I intended to spotlight again at some point.

Kenny schools Nick!!! We talk about reading move lists on cabinets, learning how to physically execute moves, playing Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game, and then...

Kenny's top five tips for learning more about fighting games!

  1. Understand differences so you can figure out what you like.
  2. Play different games to learn more about fighters in general.
  3. Learn on a joystick. (This makes Nick sad.)
  4. Be social because the best way to learn is through people.
  5. Read!!! GameFAQs, Shoryuken, etc.

Listen to Collider's recap of the 2011 Hero Complex film fest

I'm putting together today's HyperComboCast #3 as I type this, and while I'm getting that posted, I'm listening to the various audio clips from Collider.com's recap of this year's Hero Complex film festival.

Collider is sort of podcasting without realizing they're podcasting. They've got an intense set of live audio, featuring speakers such as Mike Mignola, Robert Downey Jr., and the Captain America screenwriters. Oh, and Jim Lee and Geoff Johns talk about the DC relaunch. Not too shabby.

Here's some of the audio (everything links directly to the mp3s):

I haven't listened to everything yet, but what I can tell you (based on Collider's descriptions) is that Downey Jr. and Fav talk about the Iron Man movies AND The Avengers movie, Mignola talks briefly about the Hellboy movies and comics, and Lee and Johns are joined by Grant Morrison.

There's also more audio on in the blog post I didn't link to, like Warren Beatty and Richard Donner. So if that's your thing, you should probably pop over to Collider.com and check it out.

Also, I'm eating Crunchy Nut. You'll learn more about that on tomorrow's AudioShocker Podcast #182.

Time Log #41

Back in Berlin, 1945!!! Last we saw, FuturePete hatched a sneaky plan, goading Stephen Foster to go after the unicorn horn in his detached metal arm.

New to Time Log? Start from the beginning with #0!

Sorry to make you wait for this one!!! But ya know, sometimes it gets tough to push a piece of art like this through five different collaborators when no one's getting paid and the audience is your friends. Everyone has other obligations, and sometimes Time Log takes a hit.

But enough of my blabbering! You already know that. Point is, we're in the home stretch now with less than 20 Time Log strips to go. And all I've gotta say is DAAAAMN we have some surprises in store for you!!! No one is safe and nothing is sacred!

Be back next time for more intense metal arm action in 1945!!!

Open Forum Book Club 002 & The Sisters Brothers

Welcome back paper sniffers. This week I bring you The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt. What caught me first off was the genius book cover design. I went from cover to PW review to Kindle in all of 30 seconds, and I was rather pleased throughout. If you don't like this book, you just don't know from fun.

Eli Sister and his brother Charlie are hired guns working for a shady Character called the Commodore out in Oregon City. Their last assignment left them with dead horses and bruised egos. Their latest involves tracking down a rogue prospector named Kermit in San Francisco. Throughout their journey, Eli discovers oral hygiene, Charlie gets drunk, and the bodies pile up.

Told from Eli's point of view, the book is full of family tension and a humorous self loathing due to an outsized reputation for violence. My favorite part would be the rather caustic description of San Francisco and the Gold Rush. As someone who is constantly being harangued about mission style tacos, the bay area tech scene, and SF coffee - I found it all rather fitting.

I don't know much about Westerns or frontier joints, but The Sisters Brothers is a fairly quick read, you won't get mired in umpteen characters, and the narrative rarely skips a beat. The plot may be sad, but the journey is hilarious.

And with that, this week's open forum book club is officially open. What up?

Sorry, but... Time Log tomorrow :(

I didn't wanna push the strip back any further, but Time Log's just not gonna be ready until tomorrow morning. SORRY!

I'm not gonna get too into detail except to say that we had a broken link in the chain and that sort of thing sets everything back when you have this many people working on a comic. If you've collaborated on something like this before, then I know you already know what I'm talking about.

But, in the meantime, it's not like there's a lack of comics out there by the Time Log team!!! You can check out:

Anyway, we'll see you fresh and early tomorrow morning with a brand new log!!!

The Marvel Action Hour is streaming on Netflix and it's fantastically terrible

Some of you may remember the Marvel Action Hour from back in the 90s -- a block of superhero cartoon programming featuring Iron Man and the Fantastic Four. Here's part of a terrible episode of the Iron Man show (fast-forward to 7:30 for Spider-Woman's ridiculous daughter and her awful voice acting):

See? Comedy gold. And if you live in the US, now you can stream these unbelievable cartoons on Netflix's Watch Instantly service by going to the page for Iron Man: The Complete Animated Series.

But here's the catch -- even though Netflix doesn't label the shows correctly, this so-called "Iron Man animated series" is ACTUALLY the entire Marvel Action Hour! That means hokey live-action introductions by Stan Lee for each episode, not to mention the "We'll Be Right Back" commercial intros and outros!!!

Why Netflix chose to just call it Iron Man and not the Marvel Action Hour is beyond me... but hey, the fact is that these episodes are there, so I recommend watching them while you can. As far as I know, this is the first time you've ever been able to watch the Marvel Action Hour in its entirety outside of broadcast syndication (or some sort of bootleg collection).

Recently, I started watching the Iron Man half of the show on DVD, and man did I get some good laughs. In fact, I talked about it on the AudioShocker Podcast #177. Give that podcast a listen if you want to find how just how bad the Iron Man cartoon really is (answer = really bad).

Also, this means that the infamous Johnny Storm rap song is now streaming on Netflix. I'm not sure which episode this is from, but I'm sure you can figure it out on your own pretty easily. If you're a fan of early 90s hip hop like A Tribe Called Quest, you're gonna love this:

It's hot, right? The beat's surprisingly good.

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #104 - First Ass

A Podcast with Ross and Nick

The Epic X-Men TV Review Endurance Marathon Extravaganza continues with X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 36 ) and X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 37 )! Mojo hosts a backyard bonfire, Ross's screen caps, Nick's screen caps, and Nick can't handle anymore X-Men: The Animated Series.

Ross liked X-Men: First Class but also thought there was a bunch of just okay stuff mixed in. Nick thought it was average, but it lacked mystery. Both agree that it lacked positive diversity in the cast. And when does FOX's option on the X-Men properties run out?

PLUS: X-Men burnout!!!

IN TWO WEEKS: X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 38 ) and X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 39 ) and other stuff.

AudioShocker Podcast #181 - Naked Celebrities

AudioShocker Podcast

A real geek podcaster joins the AudioShocker! Beelso from YIBR kicks off June's A Month Yamagato podcasting event.

The conversation starts off strong with naked celebrities (Blake Lively, Vanessa Hudgens, Olivia Wilde(?), Screech, and uhhh... Nick Marino???), the pornstar game (Luigi Smiley, Kermit Chablis, and Ron Beachwood), Movember, Michael Jordan's awful stache, the 90s were [or is it was... what's the proper grammar here?] a great time to be a sports fan, and Neal confuses Nick with Pittsburgh sports talk.

MORE: Nick wants to talk about Burt Reynolds in Stick and Heat, and Beelso educates the listeners on the William Shatner movie, Impulse.

PLUS: A superhero movie throwdown announcement!!!
