AudioShocker Podcast #180 - Bordello Schwartz

AudioShocker Podcast

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, Don Cheadle (stars as every black superhero?), Justique loves Gaga's new Born This Way album, Neal wants to talk about the new Nicki Minaj video but Conrad's too annoyed by her reality show for the conversation to even happen, and Justique and Nick explain their new Netflix Watch Instantly game (Circle of Eight only gets one X, while Stick gets XXXs).

After the end theme, Neal schools Conrad on Netflix DVD Queue vs. Instant Queue.

HyperComboCast #2 - Playing with Others

HyperComboCast Podcast

Kenny and Nick are back!!! And they're talking about playing with others (*snicker* tee hee).

Kenny tells a tale of Tekken Tag Tournament dick-ish-ness. Nick lost 90 rounds in a row in Dead or Alive 2. Kenny played some Soul Calibur II at a house party. Nick did a little sandbagging on Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter and then got his ass handed to him. Kenny had a Marvel Super Heroes showdown and DID NOT put money on it. Kenny's casual Super Street Fighter II Turbo domination inspired some Super Street Fighter IV and Alpha 3 whoop ass, as well as a Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves hissy fit. And Nick shares his money-saving arcade collaboration technique.

After the end theme, Kenny tells a money-minded Marvel vs. Capcom story. NO, YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR 50 CENTS BACK, MUTHAFRRRUCKA!!!

NEXT: Learning!

The AudioShocker 2011 Open Forum Book Club

Since Nick and I finally got around to doing the YDS Awards, I started thinking about other features we have neglected/are coming up -- most notably the AudioShocker Book Club. Last year, we petered out in July. This is unacceptable. In fact, it is downright criminal. Book clubs are like the OG social media. You read the book and then you talk about it with people. Boom.

That said, I know the AS audience is nowhere near my level of progress with 2010/11 novels. So, here's what we are going to do. I am going to give you a big list of recent books (emotional, scifi, weird, bad, comedy, prize winning), and every Friday I am going to use this space to host an open book discussion form. Any title. Just start commenting and I will respond. Hopefully Pete will contribute, but I'll do my best to spice it up with brief related edititorial content. Maybe a link to amazon or an alternate book cover or something - I don't know, I'm just winging it here. I may have discussed some of these books on the main podcast, but you probably weren't listening.

The point is, summer is a great time to pick up a book and read - and with plenty of sunshine and weekend reading time ahead of you - you should all be tearing through at least one book a week. For those of you who think books are heavy, cumbersome, or don't provide enough secondary distractions, Kindles & Nooks are cheaper than ever, so there really is no excuse. Hopefully I will see some of you back here next Friday.

And now, without further adieu, the AudioShocker 2011 Open Forum Book Club reading list:

  • Room by Emma Donahue (moving to say the least)
  • Skippy Dies by Paul Murray (pretty long actually)
  • Swamplandia! by Karen Russell (gators!)
  • Kraken by China Meiville (last summer we covered The City & The City by China)
  • Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart (it's weird)
  • Bossypants by Tina Fey (look, its funny)
  • A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan (won the Pulitzer)
  • And whatever else I read later this month, perhaps Jim Shepard or this Kyle Smith book on my table.
  • Or whatever YOU propose. God knows I'm always looking for a good book recommendation - but NO embossed covers.

Time Log #40

You know what I love about telling a time travel story? Jumping from era to era! Last week, we were in Berlin in 1945. This week, we catch up with dystopic future of Pittsburgh in 2069!!!

Mmmmmm.... sandwiches. This comic is making me hungry. TIME TO GO GET SOME LUNCH!

BUT WAIT! Lemme catch you up on the characters in today's comic:

  • FutureShawn and FutureSlavePaige were last seen in Time Log #26 doing pretty much the same thing you see them doing here.
  • Shawn and Nick were last seen floating through the Time Vortex in Time Log #37, following their departure from Miami in Time Log #33.

Okay, good. You're up to speed. Now it's sandwich time!

"Sandwich Time." That's a kinda catchy. I SMELL A SEQUEL!

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #103 - Home Work

A Podcast with Ross and Nick

EXTREME #34-35! Nick finally watched X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 34 ) and loves it. Ross thinks X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 35 ) sucks. PLUS: Ross has announcement!!! MORE: Giant-sized screen caps! One + Two + Three + Four + Five = fun with Apocalypse.

Then Ross and Nick talk about... WORKING FROM HOME! Nick lost track of time on Monday and it was brutal. Ross has lost his sense of day-to-day time from working from home. It's easy to lose contact with the rest of the world. Do deadlines help or hurt? Keeping weird hours vs. sleeping. BUT WAIT... there's good stuff about it, too! (And more bad stuff.) PLUS: The conversation takes a poopy turn towards clogging toilets. And then the show ends.

IN TWO WEEKS: X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 36 ) and X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 37 ) and uhhhh... more.

AudioShocker Podcast #179 - 2010 YOU DON'T SUCK Awards

AudioShocker Podcast

Wrestling hits the AudioShocker! RIP Macho Man, a brief SlimJim survey reveals Nick has never snapped in, Neal thinks Cougar Town is the same as Scrubs, Nick and Justique watched Beyond the Mat, and then we deliver the 2010 YDS awards...

BEST TV SHOW: Modern Family
BEST MOVIE: Dinner for Schmucks
BEST MUSIC: Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday
BEST BOOK: Kraken by China Mieville
BEST NETFLIX WATCH INSTANTLY: any Japanese horror movie
BEST COMIC: UNREVEALED!!!

PLUS: YDS drama! Nick throws a hissy fit and goes on podcast strike. Later, Justique goes on podcast strike. And Neal goes on uhhhhh... Neal strike. Yeah, that's it.

Sequential Underground #16 - Writer's Block vs. Showering

Sequential Underground

The podcast by indie comics creators for indie comics creators gets wet!

Okay, that came out wrong. But whatever. Here's what we talk about:

Dan hit a wall with Blue Wraith and figured out a way to work past it, Nick suffers from lack of motivation instead of writer's block, Shawn has similar losses of interest (especially with his new Phoenix 9 story), and Seth uses multiple projects to help him power through blocks.

But everyone agrees... showering is the best way to come up with new story ideas.

Then the crew shifts to the difficulties of long-term storytelling and outlining. After sharing their experiences, things organically transition into a conversation about scripting. How does scripting differ when you're a writer/artist planning on drawing your own story versus being a writer who won't be drawing your own script?

And, finally, each creator offers up one solution for working past writer's block.

Listen to Nick on the YIBR Team-Up #6 podcast!

I was honored to be a guest on this week's Yamagato Industries Business Report Team-Up #6 (long title!) podcast:

In case you don't already know, YIBR is the comics and anime podcast of TheGameHeroes.com. Hosted by Link, Mongo, and Beeslo, it's a weekly mix of current nerd news and opinions. You can connect with YIBR on their forums or on their Facebook page.

In this episode, we talk about Desperate Justice, ALF, Totall Recall #1, and tons more. If you'd rather listen to an audio-only version of the episode (with a few more awkward moments and a different opening), here ya go:

I gotta give a shout out to Colonel Panic, the artist of YIBR's title cards (kickass drawings that rep reach episode of the show). Here's the fantastic title card he did for Team-Up #6:

Thx, Panic. YOU DA MAN!!! (Panic is also the artist of the Yamagato webcomic, written by the hosts and listeners of YIBR. It's a fantastic webcomic, so check it out!)

BUT WAIT! There's more! This blog post is the perfect time to announce a special continuation of the glorious AudioShocker/YIBR crossover... June will officially be "A Month of Yamagato" on the AudioShocker Podcast!!! One-by-one, the hosts of YIBR will appear on Tuesday's podcast alongside Neal and myself. On the fourth and final Tuesday of the month, we'll wrap things up by featuring a special two-part superhero movie throwdown.

So thx again to the YIBR crew, and prepare yourself for a serious Yamagato overdose next month!

Time Log #39

Hmmm how should I preface this? Uhhhh... last time, FutureNixon told Hitler not to kill himself. So, yeah. That's basically where we're at right now.

Nothing special to hype today! Time Log's sold a few copies at Fleeting Pages (which is awesome), and I'm getting creamed in an indie book contest (which is not awesome). That's about it!

NEXT: Shawn and Nick get their future on!!!

A Podcast with Ross and Nick #102 - NO GUILT!

A Podcast with Ross and Nick

EXTREME #33-34! X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 33 ) and X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 34 ): Ross is confused about Super Haters and liked the HyperComboCast, the guys recap what happened in APWRAN #101, Nick didn't watch X-Men #34, the art is ALLLLL fucked up in it, Ross took hilarious screen caps, the Purple Man makes an appearance, Taki has a badass wheelchair, and Skids can skid.

Then Ross and Nick read some fan mail from a long-time listener -- Aaron -- and a brand new listener -- Pierce. Thx, guys!

THEN... it's guilty pleasures! Ross was invited to be on a "Guilty Pleasures" panel at TCAF, but he passed. Nick doesn't believe in guilty pleasures when it comes to comics (or any art form, for that matter). Ross can enjoy all kinds of stories. Nick coins the term "Snoborati" -- the comics bloggers that push notions of what are "good" and "bad" comics -- and goes after them!

That leads to a discussion of Youngblood #1-4... Nick never read it before but he read it recently and loved it! Ross reminisces about reading Image books in the 90s. And then the guys dive into a convo of the Youngblood story and characters.

NEXT: X-Men ( Season 3, Episode 35 ) and something else.
