Research, research, research! Dan, Shawn, Justique, Nick, and newcomer Seth Fronzoli discuss their experiences with research while making indie comics. What are the strangest things they’ve ever researched? These are comics after all… so how heavy should they even be researched in the first place? The answers will astound you! i remembered my most intense research i ever did!!! when i was in college, i did this cartoon strip for the paper and the punchline panel was George W Bush having sex with a couple of buff dudes. so i did some Internet research to get the positioning of the guys right and to make sure they’re making the right faces. plus, i needed to get Bush’s likeness down.

i wouldn’t say it’s a lude image (it could go either way, i guess — it’s sort of borderline NSFW), so just in case, here’s a link to the pic instead of me embedding it:

RESEARCH!!! Holy crap! For Heroes, inc. I’ve researched Golden Age heroes over and over and over again. I’ve researched WWII inside and out. Really dug into “secret” projects, technology, various interesting events throughout WWII ( and history in general) etc.

Then there’s all the military uniforms and garb and also just plain street clothes of the 40’s.

Then architecture of that time period, retro scifi… the list goes on and on.

Needless to say that before the internet this a HUGE pain in the ass. Trip after trip to the library.

@Scott: yeah, i can’t even imagine working on a period piece that requires accuracy for your readers to believe it takes place in that era. gotta be really tough. and before the Internet? pssshh! i never EVER used reference when i drew as a kid. haha well unless you count the Simpsons as reference.
