Sequential Underground #2 – PIX and Pen Names

Sequential Underground

The podcast by indie comics creators for indie comics creators is PIXelated!

Our PIX 2010 recap!!! Shawn’s Thundergirl was a hit. Dan’s mini-comics did best. Nothing was a big seller for Nick and Justique. Bill Boichel did an awesome job organizing the show. And our suggestions to make PIX better for next year.

Then it’s a conversation on pen names! Good idea? Bad idea? Are they worth it? We debate it!

NEXT: Collaboration and studio space.

Here’s my pen name I was talking about on the show:

Roi McKinna (which is an anagram of Nick Marino… clever!)

if you check out my first post on the Soulboxer blog, you’ll notice that it’s by Roi McKinna

I chose my pen name of “Mindy Indy” because people always misspell my real last name, Steffen. People always spell it with a “ph” or an “an” and all sorts of other messed up ways. When deciding upon a domain name, I didn’t want http://www.mindysteffen.com because of that reason, and also people remember “Mindy Indy” more because it rhymes (people always tell me that too!) Rhyming is key. Oh it’s also “Indy” for indie comics :)

Mindy Indy is a killer pen name! So memorable. In retrospect, I wish I’d used a pen name from the beginning. Not because I mind using my birth name, but because I coulda chose something really fun!

Thanks! Well hindsight is 20/20. I suppose if you really wanted to, you could start a new pen name and reinvent your branding. Some companies do that. But then I guess there’s the problem of people not knowing what else you did under a previous name :/

i’ve done so much work under my own name that it seems foolish to switch to something else at this point. with that said, i’ve considered it!
