Neal thinks will.i.am and Timbaland have no musical moral compass. Nick wonders: at what point does the "author" lose voice in the creative process? Do assistants dilute the creative process? AND... what about Jim Davis and Garfield??? Nick asks Neal if it's a must to have a blog to properly express yourself online. A culturally loaded Salt review. And a Dinner for Schmucks review.

culturally loaded.... more like an interrogation about a single comment.
most convincing response regarding the subjectivity of art:
"how do you know that he doesn't think what he's doing is awesome?"
"because it SUCKS!"
Neal is definitely insane over this Chiwetel Ejiofor/accent thing, haha. wow. i think, especially in today's climate, i wouldn't be surprised if there is racial/ethnic profiling in governmental intelligence organization hiring, but it's all secret and unspoken about, you know? Neal still totally dug a hole on that one, though.
look, how many government officials have foreign accents? riddle me that BatRoss and RobiNick

i thought it was a rather deep hole myself. but Neal swears that can;t be possible. all i'm saying is that i'm SURE there are plenty of government officials with foreign accents. last i checked, the only government job that requires American birth is president, and eventually that'll be repealed so President Terminator can take office in 2016.

A good example of my issue with the "assistant" argument -- architects. Architects are the worst perpetrators. "Frank Gehry" this and "IM Pei" that. We all know those are firm names, but when an entire building gets ascribed to a name like Frank Gehry we the common people are like "oh wow, look at the great work he did" instead of "wow, look at the incredible job that Frank Gehry's team did" which is the sad. Because how much direct interaction did he have with the building? A few sketches? Some glad handing with clients? That isn't the art in question. I want to see creators stay hungry and I want to see their assistants come up and make a name for themselves.
Perhaps this is just apprenticeship, but I don't like the idea of applying apprenticeship to art. Art is something you develop yourself and is very personal. You can teach color theory and perspective, but the application belongs to the practitioner.
Or is it too late at night and have I (as usual) lost site of where I was going?

Where can i get a Nick the Dick t-shirt?

i'm sort of on the fence with the assistant/dilution thing, since i think art can also be collaborative and be perfectly great. i'd also argue that NO art is entirely 100% developed by the artist personally, even art that is created privately, since nothing is created in a vacuum (see: the differences between art from different cultures/countries) and people are very much products of their environments. maybe that's taking it a bit too far away from the original art assistant/"art team" argument, though.
or what about a medium like film where you by necessity MUST work with other people to realize the piece?

i see nothing wrong with the art team thing, though i agree with Neal that an art team should be credited. HOWEVER... i also understand the economic necessity that causes said art teams to not be credited. i guess have mixed feelings about it -- not the notion of an art team (i think that's a great thing), just rather the notion of whether an art team should always be recognized or if there are times when maybe it should be sealed with a silent paycheck...
well in warhol's case, i don't think he exactly compensated his team sufficiently. if he did, perhaps they wouldn't have hated him so much.
but that's the thing, isn't it? people aren't all motivated by the same thing. money is important some people, to others the credit, and still others just the sheer enjoyment of doing something. the titular partner/leader/whoever's real job is to find out how to properly motivate AND compensate the team.
oh, is that the main argument? credit and compensation? i guess i was coming at it differently. i can agree with that, though.
like Neal's saying, though, another thing is i think some people are fine being just the assistant/team, they'd RATHER do that than be a solo artist or the director of the project.

it wasn't my main point, but i suppose i sort of meandered into it. that basically IS the holy grail of MBA / bschool though, figuring out how to motivate/compensate everyone with the least amount of b.s./redtape.
@Neal: i can't believe you made that shirt. i know i'm a little a late on it but i just saw it now
i'm thinking about changing my avatar to that
