The top 9 movies I like that make people give me the "You like that?" face

You know that face, right? You're all like "Oh, that was great!" and then someone else is like "You like that?" and they give you that look of shock, confusion, and disgust.

Well, I get that look a lot more than others. So here's a short list of movies that ellicit that response the most.

9. Soul Plane. Everyone I show this to agrees with me -- this movie is good.

8. Music and Lyrics. In general, I enjoy most Hugh Grant movies.

7. My Bloody Valentine. It was awesome in 3D, okay?

6. G-Force. This was also pretty awesome in 3D.

5. Muppets from Space. I think this is the best Muppet film out there, if not the best film out there.

4. Drag Me to Hell. Don't get it twisted -- this is a comedy movie.

3. Street Fighter. Again, you gotta rememeber that this is a comedy.

2. Balls of Fury. This too is a comedy movie. And a damn good one.

1. The Ladies Man. So many people thumb their nose at this and they've never seen it! Give it a chance. It's hilarious.

P.S. The Back Issue Binge is going to become a non-weekly, whenever-it's-fun-and-easy-to-meet-up sort of thing. I'll try and let you know ahead of time when it's gonna show up.

is this the original My Bloody Valentine or the remake?

i think almost every movie i like would be on a list like this.

  2. 2 nick marino

    oh right, it's the remake.

and yeah, i've def given you that face during the podcast before. i guess that makes me a huge hypocrite.

  3. 3 ross

yeah the remake is pretty good, i didn't see it in 3D but i dug it, much better than the original. although apparently there's an unrated version of the original with all the gore put back in, so maybe the old one is really amazing. XD

you are totally a hypocrite, nick. nah, i'm kidding. everybody's got movies they like that cause this reaction.

My Bloody Valentine and Drag Me To Hell are the only movies i've seen off this list, and i like both of them! my parents also loved Drag Me To Hell, for what it's worth, heh.

you'd probably like Balls of Fury. maybe the JCVD Street Fighter too.

Muppets in Space rules. I also like Drag Me to Hell, it could've been one of my favorite movies ever if it weren't for the unfortunate gypsy curse/Romani stereotypes.

You don't mean to imply that Muppets in Space is better than either Muppets Take Manhattan or The Great Muppet Caper, do you?

Kaylie: yeah, i agree about the unfortunate gypsy curse thing, that was one of the main things keeping me from really loving the movie. i remember i posted about that on my livejournal after i saw it but i can't remember what i said about it. XD

Having been friends with Nick for nearly a decade now, I can attest to the fact that these faces are consistently made. I think what makes your taste, though, Nick, so particularly consternating is that oftentimes you're right about a movie being worth watching, but not always. Or, just-often-enough, I like the movies you recommend, so that somehow I still watch the movies that you recommend, even when they're totally groan-inducing.

Irish Jam pops into my head as such an instance, though I honestly can't remember if it was good or bad...

@Pete: i love Irish Jam!!! that should be on this list! and yes, i'm saying that Muppets from Space is the best of the bunch.

@Ross + Kaylie: i thought the gypsy thing was stupid, but no more stupid than the ignorant voodoo and gypsy curse/magic that gets used over and over in Hollywood BS. not saying it should be perpetuated, just saying that it was a stupid part of an otherwise goofy horror parody, so i think in context it was fairly forgettable. especially considering the movie is basically a satire in disguise.

Nick: yeah, you're right, the movie was silly which cushioned the gypsy stuff. i still liked the movie a ton, don't get me wrong, i mean it's no Evil Dead 1 or 2 but it's still great and is still one of the best horror movies in the past several years. although i don't think i agree that it was satire, i found it very genuine, i don't think there's an ironic or sarcastic bone in Sam Raimi's body.

Muppets from Space is actually a really fun movie. I watched it several times when I was younger. Might actually watch it again once I'm in the mood for it.

  15. 12 nick marino

yes! it's great! if you have Netflix, Muppets from Space is in Watch Instantly (in widescreen, natch, which is rare because i can't even find a widescreen DVD of that movie).
