What's with Rhodey's crop-top? Are super heroes sporting midriff armor now? Is this some sort of new metro-hero thing? What's next? will Zatana start rocking some harem pants? Is Spiderman gonna start struttin' in Man-Wedges? Will Hobgoblin swap his satchel of bombs for a purple manbag? WTF Nick?!!?!

all valid questions, none of which i intend to answer.

    MET-HERO!

okay for reals, here's the deal - so Rhodey, previous to this comic, was involved in some sort of accident fighting in the military that left him near-dead. Tony helped him survive... through the use of extensive cybernetics. in this image, his left torso and right arm are actually cybernetics, not the armor. however, the catch of the cybernetics was that Rhodey needs him chest plate to keep everything functioning (a lot like the way Tony originally did in the comics). so when Rhodey was fighting the Skrull army in this Weapon of SHIELD story, and he was kidnapped, they took off all his armor and attempted to dissect him (ala alien autopsy cliche, etc). Rhodey, being the cybernetic badass he was, escaped and put his chest plate back on, and kicked some ass. this shot right here is from the moment when he got his chest plate back on, but hadn't yet had the chance to put on the rest of the suit. hence the bare midriff. but all that cybernetic stuff is in the past now, i think, because Rhodey should be in a new cloned body thx to the end of his most recent solo book.

so.... what you are saying is: Rhodey is MetHero and loves him some croptop cybernetic fashion?

    to put it simply, yes.

i know it's for the visuals, but i always hated how in comics whenever somebody was bionic, the bionic limb never has skin over it. you'd think if they had the technology for fully-integrated, completely side-effect free cybernetics that they'd at least have some kind of synthetic or stem cell-cloned skin to go over the metal junk and not just let the stuff hang out, or butt up against regular skin like is apparently going on in Rhodey's torso. seems stupid.

and didn't Forge, when he had a bionic leg, not even wear pants over it? like his costume had one full pant leg but then no fabric covering his metal leg? did he cut the leg off his costume so he could show off his bionic leg? WHY?

    I blame Jax from MK.

Ha! Jax was more of a follower rather than a leader in that trend. Forge and Cyborg and a bunch of others beat him to the exposed bionic limb look. i dunno why it's done like that, but personally, i think it's sweet. i mean, why waste the time with fake skin when you can just show off some shiny steel??? honestly, i think the symbolic inference is that we can use technology to substitute for the mechanical parts that we lose, but we can never actually use the technology to be "human" or "sensitive" again. i'm not saying that's a good theme necessarily, but i think it's often the implied theme when you see exposed cybernetics.

nick: that still doesn't explain why Forge wouldn't have a pant leg. are his clothes tailored to have one pant leg or does he cut them off? either way WHY???

plus it's probably super gross in the area where the metal meets skin. it's probably all flappy and prone to infections.

yeah i bet it's hideous where the metal meets skin EXCEPT if the limb actually goes on a bit past where the metal begins and the metal actually covers up the gross parts.

i assume that Forge probably requests his pants tailored with one leg only. i mean, whoever designs and sews the X-costumes is living in a horrible nightmare world anyway, so one less leg means a little less sewing, and then Forge probably has to pay a little bit less for his custom pants.
