AudioShocker Podcast #125 - How to Retcon Your Machete

One two five deep and still going strong! The Haunt comic is made almost like Time Log, but not like Y the Last Man. Neal can't get excited for The Losers movie. Nick is looking forward to Kick-Ass. Neal doesn't do hardcovers. Iron Man 2 looks good... or does it? And is Don Cheadle a retcon? How to Train Your Dragon trained Nick's emotions. Just what is the Machete release date??? WE NEED TO KNOW.

after not having seen a flick in theatres for a while, i feel like picking which movie to see becomes more and more important. you don't want to pick a dud, and that's why i'm hesitant to go see kick-ass, the losers, and other 50%-sure-ish movies.

nick, what is up with your pronunciation of "machete"? XD

yeah, casting a different actor isn't a retcon; i don't know if it HAS a term but it doesn't fit with the definition of retcon. a retcon is changing the meaning of a story point previously written in the past. an example of a retcon for the Howard/Cheadle thing, is that in Iron Man 2 you find out Rhodey is a shapeshifter and therefore he was a shapeshifter through the entire first movie. and even though it's obvious the character was not written as a shapeshifter originally, he is "now" in the movie universe and the first movie takes on a whole different meaning. heh.

nick is just trying to be 'culturally sensitive'.

i don't speak Spanish and i don't know how to say the word the Spanish way! i could just start saying "mash-etty" instead...

about the retcon, i agree with Ross and that's my basic point. but i also think Neal has a point, because -- even though the actor has changed and not the character in the story -- the way that the character appears and sounds has changed, both in the casting and in the actual story (even though the change in story isn't intended).

so, for example, if Sue Storm was always intended to be ugly in Fantastic Four #1-3, but suddenly she's a bombshell in #4 and the rest of the cast acts like she was ALWAYS a bombshell to begin with, that's sort of a retcon. it's not a major plot point, per se, but it is a character trait retcon of sorts.

i mean, in the culturally accepted comic book sense of retcon, Neal is wrong. but in a grand definition where "retcon = altering the past plot of a story to create a new meaning" it could be argued that replacing Howard with Cheadle -- and then acting like it was ALWAYS Cheadle -- is a retcon.
