really really enjoyed your found art/tagging/catch phrase discussion, so good!!! i'm with you on the differences between a meme/catchphrase and tagging, Nick.

i think a better example than "hasta la vista" is "i'll be back" from the first Terminator, because "i'll be back" was never intended as the catchphrase for the character and film, it was just the Terminator simply informing the police officer that he'd be back. but for some reason it caught on with audiences and became a catchphrase; another difference, not only identity like Nick is saying, which is important, between a catchphrase/meme and tagging is intent. tagging has a specific purpose and without the purpose isn't really anything and wouldn't even be created, but like Nick is saying the meme/catchphrase is something that is often by chance and not intended, it's something that the audience/viewers decide independently of the creators/artists of the work. obviously you could also intend to create a catchphrase, but that's never a sure thing, as you could create one and it won't catch on; although if it DID catch on and that's what you intended, i think that's almost a different thing from both a regular catchphrase and a tag. like imagine if in JAWS, when Roy Scheider goes "you're gonna need a bigger boat" (which was improvised by the actor on the spot and not from the script) that the filmmakers orchestrated that line to become the catchphrase, it's like.. it changes the whole meaning and resultant cultural impact.

can't wait to see Gentlemen Broncos, big fan of vomit jokes. does it top the funeral barforama scene in MAFIA! or the barf scene in Team America?? i can't see how you could top either of those but i hope Broncos does.

if my TV got any channels i would totally watch American Idol. back when before the digital switchover and i got Fox, i'd watch So You Think You Can Dance which is sort of similar but i think generally has hotter girls.

actually, in terms of the catchphrase thing, i was thinking of the ones that're intentionally scripted... but for the love of Jeebus, i can't remember why.
