Wizard World Philly Cup O Joe, AudioShocker Style

So I went to Wizard World Philadelphia today. It was my second convention experience in my 21 plus years of being a fanatic comic book fan. It was my first time going to a comic book convention panel, and I chose Cup O Joe to pop my panel cherry.

It was a glorified press conference with fans instead of press outlets asking the questions. Of course, I took notes on the best news tidbits just for you:

  • Fred Van Lente and Kev Walker will be the creative team behind Marvel Zombies 3, debuting in September. This mini series will see the Marvel Zombies cross into Marvel 616 continuity proper (though 616 Black Panther, with the new Fantastic Four in tow, already crossed over with the Galactus infused zombies last year). This mini series will see the reveal of Florida’s Initiative team.
  • Ed Brubaker is gearing up to introduce Lady Bullseye in the Daredevil series. The preview slide that Marvel showed looked like a cross between Bullseye, Elektra, and Typhoid Mary.
  • An adept fan asked what was coming up for Black Panther (a favorite of this blogger). Joe Quesada explained that T’Challa is under the guide of editor Axel Alonso and fans can be sure that the character will be involved in every crossover / Marvel line event possible. Joe then went on to refer to Alonso as a “whore” before he mentioned that BET’s Black Panther animated series will feature a great deal of content from Reginald Hudlin’s first story arc of Black Panther.
  • Musing on One More Day, Joe explained that something happened on the Wedding Day of Peter and Mary Jane that caused the current Mephisto influenced reality where Spider-Man currently exists. The “how” will all be revealed over the course of Brand New Day. And yes, Peter and Aunt May still lived in Avengers Tower. Mary Jane, however, may have not been there with them (the answer was vague).
  • Hulk (the Jeph Loeb relaunch series) will have an incredible pair of artists doing a tag-team job after the first story arc. Hulk #7-9 will be drawn by Art Adams and Frank Cho working together on alternating scenes. That is just wonderful, according to me. I would have bought this week’s King Size Hulk if only it wasn’t stuffed with reprints and marked up to $4.99. Hopefully the Adams and Cho issues will only run $2.99.
  • Another adept fan asked about the Crew. Tom Brevoort said there are no plans for the Crew to return as a unit, though Rhodey is in Avengers: The Initiative and Junta is in Last Defenders.
  • The panel took a turn towards the nasty when a fan asked if Aunt May still hooked up with Jarvis, a character recently revealed to be a Skrull in Secret Invasion. This led to Tom Brevoort cracking jokes about Aunt May missing her period. Joe Q got in on the fun when he said, “Skrull or no Skrull, Aunt May has her needs.” That’s a classic quote right there.

The AudioShocker got to act as newsmaker when we finally asked about Senator Kooning, the only regularly appearing black character in Iron Man that just happens to have a last name that’s one letter off (and sounds exactly like) a racial slur. Joe Q looked like a dear in the headlights and Tom Brevoort did his best impression of a Bush White House spokesperson, saying that Jack Kooning was named after a historical figure. That must be one of the most obscure historical figures around because I’ve never seen a single word about this “historical” figure. Suffice to say, I’m unconvinced but I appreciated the candid response.

All in all, the panel was fun. I stayed around afterwards to thank Tom B for answering my question even though it was a tough one. I also asked one more final query about the fate of the Falcon, who has been rumored (in the most vague sense) to kick the bucket in the near future. According to Tom Brevoort, don’t expect the Falcon to go anywhere anytime soon. Thanks, Tom. Now I can rest easy.

Vacation in South Carolina - Sweet Like Tea

So, I got back a couple days ago from my Memorial Day vacation in Folly Beach, SC. FB is about 25 minutes from Charleston (owing in large part to the 30mph speed limit on the island). This was my 2nd annual trip with 13 other kids from this ridiculous hamlet I am loathe to call home.

We ate Cocoa Pebbles in the morning, sat on the beach during the day, and watched the Karate Kid trilogy at night. It is worth noting that we aimed to consume a lot of YeungLing and ignore work/ cellphones. In these endeavors we were successful. I also finally understand the importance of SPF 30 and what this crazy ’sunburn’ thing is.

If you are lucky enough to have a friend with access to a large beach house I recommend you take advantage of it - right now! Book a ticket, gas up the whip, pump up your bike - do what it takes - but GO!

And with that - I give you the least incriminating photos of the trip, (thanks for the pictures Todd).

Sunrise on the beach.

ComicShocker Week 22 2008

I’ve been pretty busy lately so the ComicShocker actually (GASP!) missed its first week ever last week. Instead, the AudioShocker got an SEO update. I think that’s a fair trade.

Keeping it short and sweet this week, I’m going to pass along a link to more free comics online. Ahhh, free comics how I love you…

This week we’re checking out Gemini #1 for free. I’m a big Dynamo 5 fan, a series by Jay Faerber and Mahmud A Asrar. Since Gemini is written by Faerber as well, I caught a bunch of previews in the back of my Dynamo 5 issues.

Well, I didn’t get to pick up Gemini #1. But now I can read the first issue of Gemini for free over on Newsarama. I’m ashamed to say that at the time of writing this, I still haven’t read the comic. But I’m a busy guy, damn it.

Speaking of which, the AudioShocker (a.k.a. just me) will be at Wizard World Philadelphia this weekend (a.k.a. just Saturday for a few hours). Email me at nick@audioshocker.com if you want to meet up and say hi. Feel free to attach nude photos to your email (ladies only, please).

A Little AudioShocker SEO Update

For those of you that frequent the AudioShocker website, you’ll notice a subtle but definite difference. I gave the site a quick update via some Search Engine Optimization. To be specific, I gave the title tags an SEO update.

Thanks to the WordPress SEO Title Tag plugin, I was able to fit some quality keywords into our titles. It doesn’t affect anything on the user end other than bookmarking, however it should have a big Google benefit for us in the long term.

Now I’m no official SEO expert, but I know enough to get the job done right. If you have a WordPress blog, I highly recommend the SEO Title Tag plugin. And if you have a website at all, I highly recommend that you learn why title tags are important.

Girls I Want to Stick It to - Lisa Edelstein

Sorry folks - I was in the UK all last week. It kinda sucked. I missed a whole week of TV including BSG. However, more importantly - I missed this:

Yeah, that. Now, say what you will about Lisa Edelstein’s Dr. Cuddy and her seemingly permanent dour face, she’s got a little sexy to her. She’s got style and pulls off skirts extremely well. I’m not going to wax poetic about this or anything. Afterall, I’ve seen better stripteases by better looking people. I’m just a sucker for pigtails. Thank you Television and Lisa Edelstein for making my Monday bearable.

ComicShocker Week 20 2008

Wonder Woman #20. I’ve been waiting for this. Aaron Lopresti on THE superheroine. It’s pretty good. Not mind blowing. But decent.

My biggest praises? The art and the character of Etta Candy. My most egregious criticisms? The dialogue that doesn’t flow well (most everything except for Etta) and the seeming disconnect between Wonder Woman’s Beowulf adventure and Diana’s encounter with an unfriendly foe.

On another note, I’m sure it’s been addressed, but Etta Candy is definitely modeled after Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone. At the very least, it’s a physical likeness. I’ve never met Gail so I can’t speak for the personality.

And on a TOTALLY unrelated note, today I just learned that there are approximately 30 free issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol. 4 on Wowio. I know I’m a little bit late on this but who cares?! We’re talking about free comic books here.

The deal with Wowio is that you have to confirm your location, which can be a bit bizarre. You can do it with a credit card / debit card. You can do it with a non-anonymous email address (whatever the hell that is). Or you can send them a scan of your photo ID.

DAMN! All we want to do is download free books Wowio. Why make it so weird???

Podcast Episode 031

Free Comic Book Day 2008 - A Humble Marvel Adventures Confession

Marvel Adventures FCBD 2008A little over one week ago, I came to this forum — known among savvy readers as the awesome AudioShocker — and talked smack on the Marvel Adventures Free Comic Book Day offering from Marvel Comics.

Truth be told, talking smack is a bit of an exaggeration. It was more like expressing disappointment. And I was disappointed at the time — I had read the issue and it just didn’t live up to my standards.

Truth be told, saying I read the issue is a bit of an exaggeration. It was more like I read the first two-thirds of the story, and then I made assumptions about the rest of the issue.

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I reviewed the issue without finishing it. I broke the unbreakable rule of reviewing — don’t review something that you have read, seen, watched, or listened to from start to finish.

It just so happens that I finished reading the Marvel Adventures FCBD 2008 issue on Saturday, and DAMN! what an ending! Once the Mandarin shows up for a second time, the story really hits a groove and finishes in fine form.

Elephant SteveI apologize for giving an opinion half-cocked. It was wrong. And I’m grateful for finishing this excellent comic book by Jeff Parker, Paul Tobin, Alvin Lee, Terry Pallot, Wil Quintana, and Nate Piekos.

To make matters even better, the issue finished off with a Mini Marvels comic strip by Chris Giarrusso featuring none other than Elephant Steve! I love Elephant Steve. And I love this comic book.
