Ugh. The idea of yet another Hendrix album is not appealing to me. Don’t get it twisted people, I love Jimi. But talk about beating a franchise to death. Yes this is another live performance disc. If that bothers you than just stop reading this now. Bear in mind though, he did fire up his axe for the crowd.
I feel like this whole performance just lacks the passion of the studio recording. Does that sound a little backwards? About half the tracks are from Are You Experienced. High and lows after the jump…
Wind Cries Mary - Fuck I love this song so much. This is my favorite Jimi song of all time, but what always gets me is how short it is: 3 minutes and 24 seconds. The live version? 3:53 with an intro. This track maintains its mellow nature and is probably the best presented song of the bunch.
Hey Joe - Crazy song right? Basically a take on the 32 20 Blues. But where is the energy? I feel like Jimi was half asleep during this. I just don’t feel the despair or duality in Jimi’s voice. I genuinely think Jimi sounded better in the studio where he had more control over his sound.
Rock Me Baby - ugh ugh ugh. just stop playing and get to Purple Haze already!
Purple Haze - I think Hendrix was in a hurry to finish his set. The whole track feels a little sped up - just like a ClearChannel radio station! (btw, fuck you very much corporate radio)
Sadly, Little Wing - my other favorite Hendrix track of all time - is absent. Then again, I don’t think any of the Axis tracks were on this. Maybe it came out a couple months after this performance?
